  • Gelfand-Shirov, Bazna 2009

The latest issue of the always great New in Chess arrived today. Flipping through it, I was immediately drawn to this diagram:

In the game, Boris Gelfand played 58. a4; a move given a ? by Nisipeanu.

Instead, he writes that "White could have won with a study-like sacrifice of all(!) his kingside pawns. It is hard to imagine that the a-pawn and the wrong coloured bishop are enough for victory afterwards:"

    This is what he proposes:

    58. f5, exf5
    59. e6, Bxe6
    60. h5, gxh5
    61. g6, fxg6
    62. Kxe6

    62. .... Kd8
    63. Kd5, g5
    64. a4, f4
    65. a5, f3
    66. a6, f2
    67. a7, f1(Q)
    68. a8(Q)+, Kd7
    69. Qb7+, Kd8
    70. Qc7+, Ke8
    71. Qe7 mate

The actual game was drawn in 71 moves.

On the off chance that you aren't familiar with this great magazine, here's a link to the latest issue's contents:

      NIC Article on Marcel Duchamp

Have you noticed the way the board is set up in the photos of Marcel Duchamp both in the index and the article?

They comment on it saying it must have been a joke of Duchamp's. However, it's not just a question of the board being turned 90 degrees as the pieces aren't set up properly either. Who knows?

That article was far from the best thing in the issue as far as I am concerned, but it does illustrate the wide-ranging coverage that NIC provides as well as the high quality of the writing itself.

I doubt that I'll purchase the book featured in the piece.
