  • Are you running a chess business in Canada?

    If so, the law requires:
    • HST - Any business that generates more than $30,000 in annual taxable sales has to register for HST.
    • Tournament entry fees are subject to HST..in case you were not aware.

    The threshold for non-profits is $50,000 in annual taxable sales.

    Supervised instructional classes or activities involving athletics, outdoor recreation, music, dance, crafts, arts, hobbies or other
    recreational activities are exempt if:
    – You provide them primarily to children 14 years of age or under and it does not involve overnight supervision throughout a large part of the
    program;

    If 50% + 1 of your children are 14 years of age or under then that meets the definition of primarily according to Revenue Canada officials that I spoke to.

      Hi Vlad, the above is for not-for-profit organizations, right?

        That is correct. I was quoting from a government publication aimed at non-profits.
