General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Jordan can now add himself to the long list of people Jean has insulted and slandered since he got back from Guelph. But I say, if Jordan thinks he can get a decent Closed in St. John's, and enough players like the idea, go for it. Don't let Jean Hebert decide who organizes what tournaments.
Paul,
Respectfully, I will have to stop you there.
Jean and I know each other well enough from live interactions that we also know each other's intentions when posting messages online. I do not take anything he says as insulting, nor does he from me. Jean and I are well enough acquainted with each other through years Friday night blitz tournament at the former Specialiste in Montreal to know each other's personalities.
While I appreciate your comments, I also know that Jean's international tournament experience both in and outside Canada would be very helpful for an amateur organizer like myself. If I were to pick anyone's brain about what would be needed when organizing a tournament such as the Canadian Championships, Jean would have to be up there as one of my top candidates.
That's not to say that Jean's opinions will be the be-all and end-all of my decision making, it's not to say that I will agree with everything that he says, and it's not to say that I will not consult other players for opinions and assistance. What it is to say is that the guy who just won the last Zonal would be a good person to have in my corner, as I am hoping to be the guy who organizes the next one.
There is a very large amount of useful information that Jean and everyone else has given in these threads alone, way more than I will ever have time to sort through. I have been trying to eliminate the emotional aspect of these messages to see what will make a successful Closed for 2011. I hope that anyone reading this message with thoughtful ideas will e-mail me. I will consider everything that I receive...
Thanks!! Jordan

I believe Jean was telling you that because of your opinion on getting sponsors, you are not good enough to hold a Closed. I thought that was an insult to you, but if you disagree, that's your perogative.
So if you are still planning on holding the Closed, either 1) you are ignoring Jean's opinion of your qualifications, or 2) Jean has pep-talked you into believing the sponsors are there waiting to be milked after all. Or a third possibility is that you know some other source of funds that you aren't mentioning.
Either way, good luck to you! And if you do hold it, and for some reason it isn't up to Jean's minimum standards, you at least know now what will be forthcoming from him. I don't think Hal had that foreknowledge, but who knows? I'm beginning to think there must be some personal grudge Jean holds against Hal, and maybe Hal knew about it and expected Jean's reaction.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.

Paul,
I think you're over-emoting Jean's message. He was making a suggestion, that's all.
Jean's suggestion did not exactly respond to what I had said (I can hardly see why any organization in 2009 would even consider sponsoring chess anywhere in North America.). I did not state that I cannot or will not seek sponsorship, I merely said that cannot see sponsoring a chess tournament as being financially viable for an organization in this economic crisis.
I will keep my plans for sponsorship search on the QT for the moment for a number of reasons. However, the thought of having an unsponsored Closed, especially so far from central Canada, is absurd.

I will do my best, and if I do I hope to uphold everyone's minimal standards and much more!

Paul - I've got at least one complaint about your inappropriate remark above. Just stick to debating your points, OK? There's no need to demonstrate Godwin's Law.
We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.

This entire thread (and pretty much all of the other one on this topic) should be closed and deleted in my opinion. (perhaps not everyone would agree with the latter idea, but close these useless threads please - enough already!)
Nobody forcing anyone to read it. Obviously since it's just about the most-read and -posted on thread in all of Chesstalk, some people see some value in having it.

Jordan,
I will try to be clearer. You can pick your favorite reason among this incomplete list:
1) the sponsor (who is generally a person before being an organisation or a corporation) personally likes chess. This is the case with the current Montreal International sponsored by Empresa. Of course they welcome a little visibility but that is secondary.
2) the sponsor has a kid playing chess;
3) the sponsor believes in chess as an educational tool for our youth (it would help to promote the game to convinve more people of that...) and wants to help out promoting it as a service to the community;
4) the sponsor cares about being involved and making a difference in having a prestige event;
5) the sponsor (the city for example) sees an opportunity to put his town on the map (that was the case in 1988 for the Chess Festival in St-John, New-Brunswick). A national championship in St-John NF is likely to attract that kind of sponsorship;
6) the sponsor knows that even in North America chess is played by millions and known by tens of million people; and through the internet any tournament with decent coverage will have a world wide audience;
7) the kind of pocket money we are looking for makes the sponsor uneasy to say "no" in fear of looking cheap. :)
I would quote and requote, but clearly your understanding of the big picture is a lot broader than mine.
That said, would you be interested in helping to organize a Closed here in St. John's, NL?
Jordan
PS - that's not a sarcastic question, I'm honestly asking for your help...
Jordon, are you all right? You haven't been holding your breath waiting for Jean's answer, have you?
I'm sure that despite his ENORMOUS EXPERTISE as to what an organizer needs to do to promote chess, and despite his ENORMOUS DESIRE to promote chess, Jean Hebert has NO INTEREST in helping organize any tournament outside of Quebec. Why, that would mean putting up signs! And name cards on tables!
Unless, of course, you tell him that he doesn't have to sweat anything, he just needs to lend his name to the event, and you have all sponsorship lined up so that he can just sit back and enjoy the accolades from having his name associated.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
Will you be taking a run at chess organizing yourself Paul? You certainly have a lot of ideas and strong opinions. Putting them to the test successfully would be the best way to gain credibility.

Paul my friend,
Get on the threadmill, and work out a good sweat to let that extra energy out. Then sit and read, instead of writing. That might do ENORMOUS wonders for you. :)
