  • Canadian Closed final standings. Awesome Jean!

I could have posted these last night but it was the last thing on my mind. The participants were all great sportsmen. We had no problems. Our appeals committee of Jean Hébert, Igor Diviljan and Dwight Vincent had an easy time in this respect.

Jean told me after the tournament that he was very impressed with the quality of play by the youth contingent. Porper was also impressed with their play, but no so thrilled with the impact on his rating!

So a hearty congrats to Jean, and also to our newest IM elect Jonathan Tayar, and FMs elect Louie Jiang and Aman Hambleton. The minimum score for an FM title is 4.5, but Louie and Aman scored 6.0 and 5.5 respectively.

    Hi Hal,
Victor Kaminski lost to Aman Hambleton in his last game. Could you correct that, please? That win (game) was decisive about the FM title. Thank you.
    Regards,
    Caesar

Smthing wrong here - a result, a pairing, or an accident.

Re: Canadian Closed final standings. Awesome Jean!

SwissSys went all wonky on us as we were entering the Round 9 results. We're sending some feedback to Thad about it, but it's possible I missed one swap while trying to repair the pairings.

Re: Canadian Closed - Hambleton - Kaminski - Rd. 9

          Hi Caesar:

I don't know if the game is on MonRoi between Hambleton and Kaminski ( I've forgotten my log in name/password and they haven't yet answered my e-mail asking for help ). But Aman finished with a very nice Q-sac and I'm not sure but it may even have been mate - it was a bit long line and I had trouble following it to the end. Maybe Aman can advise if it actually was mate.

Another interesting result by the winner:

Four straight wins. Shiyam was going for five but was stopped by Jean :)

Congratulations to Jean! Not only a great player but a great sportsman as well! Age almost 52 (the oldest champion in modern Canadian chess? - Maurice Fox was 51 in 1949?) and 31 years between wiining Canadian chess championships - very impressive!

                  Final standings corrected

As Chris mentioned, Swissys went weird on us during the 9th round. I backed out the 9th round and re-entered the pairings and results. This should be correct. Sorry about that folks!

                    Hey Bob,

The line actually runs Qxa3 Rxa3 Rb1+ Ne1 Rxe1 Kg2 Bf1+ and Kf3 is forced due to Kh1 Bh3 Qg1 Nf2 mate, and then be2+ will win back the Q and i believe that puts me a piece up with an easy win :) Also, the game is on monroi once you finally get in, so you can see for yourself.

                    Cheers,

                    Aman
