    European Club Cup 2018

    September 2, 2018

    From: Carlos Colodro at chess24.com:

    https://chess24.com/en/read/news/eur...and-ding-liren

“European Club Cup with Carlsen, Mamedyarov and Ding Liren

The line-ups for the 2018 European Chess Club Cup — to take place from 12-18 October in Chalkidiki, Greece — have been announced. Magnus Carlsen will participate in this tournament but not in the Olympiad, so, since Fabiano Caruana will not go to Greece, another pre-match encounter between the two seems highly unlikely. Besides Carlsen, the players' starting rank list includes Mamedyarov, Ding Liren, Giri, Karjakin, Nepomniachtchi and Grischuk.

This will be the 34th edition of the European Chess Club Cup. This year, the event will take place at the Porto Carras Grand Resort in Chalkidiki, Greece. The format will be the same one used in previous years, a rather short 7-round Swiss tournament. The Open section has 58 teams listed by now, while the Women's includes 12.

The biggest highlight is the participation of World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who will play in Chalkidiki three weeks before his match against Caruana. The American, on the other hand, withdrew from the Isle of Man Open — understandable, since that event will finish on October 28th. Fabiano will represent the U.S. in the Olympiad, however, certainly a longer and more stressful event, in September.

Magnus will make his debut for the sixth seeded Valerenga Sjakklubb squad. The Norwegian team has strengthened its line-up remarkably, as they only had three titled players last year. Carlsen will be supported by David Howell, Nils Grandelius, Evgeny Romanov, Borki Predojevic and his compatriots Aryan Tari, Kjetil Lie and Johan-Sebastian Christiansen. In such a short event, it would not be a big surprise for this line-up to finish on the podium.”

Magnus had a nice win in the endgame this round but I prefer miniatures. Although it is hard to defend against the French I admire White's play here: https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2018...k_Lasse_Ostebo

Howard Staunton on Howell (tweet) - The slow process by which the professor forces victory savours a good deal of a cat playing with the mouse before she breakfasts on him.

European Chess Club Cup: Carlsen 4.3 Points Ahead Of Caruana

After drawing two games in a row at the European Club Cup, Magnus Carlsen saw his lead over Fabiano Caruana in the live ratings decrease to just 4.3 points. Alkaloid and Padova lead the championship after four rounds.

It shouldn't be the main story of the European Club Cup, but it is definitely one that a lot of fans are keeping an eye on. Carlsen playing the event, and putting his number-one status on the line, is something to follow now that the gap between the world number-one and two is so small.

Just one loss for Carlsen can tip the balance.

European Club Cup: Svidler's Mednyi Vsadnik take gold

Any of the top teams could have won it, but Mednyi Vsadnik ended up ahead at the European Club Cup in Porto Carras. Valerenga arrived in the last round as sole leaders but barely one point ahead of the four-team chasing pack — the eventual champions from Saint Petersburg defeated Carlsen's squad and edged AVE Novy Bor on tiebreak criteria to take home the gold medals.

Two recurring storylines of the tournament converged on the first board of the top match: the looming threat of Magnus Carlsen losing his number one spot in the ratings list before the World Championship match and Peter Svidler's mystifying streak of bad results — the Russian GM lost four games in a row before beating Erik Blomqvist (258 points lower-rated than him) in round six.

The eventual champions were not the only ones to finish with 12/14 match points, however. The second-seeded AVE Novy Bor defeated Odlar Yurdu 4:2 to get silver medals. Both Czech players in the line-up — David Navara and Viktor Laznicka — won in the last round to boost the result of their country's team.

As a last remark, we should mention that Magnus Carlsen managed to retain the number one spot in the ratings list. However, it is very telling that, with only a couple of weeks left before the World Championship match, Fabiano Caruana is a mere 2.4 points behind the Norwegian — an ideal setup for what seems will be a very exciting match!

Peter Svidler - Congrats to my home town team, Bronze Horseman (@N_Vitiugov, V. Fedoseev, M. Matlakov, @Maxrodmax, K. Alekseenko, A. Goganov) for winning their 2nd ECC, despite giving the field a one board handicap.

Vålerenga Sjakklubb - A very tough week is over. We lost the last round and finished in 5th place. We played all the strongest teams and put up a fight in every round. We won four individual medals which says a lot about our overall performance. Next year we will come back even stronger!
