Does anyone happen to know why the US team of 29 players has only 6 boys... is something else going on, or is it USCF politics, or what?

From what I can see on the USCF site - absolutely anyone can play, but they have to pay their own way. Players can "qualify" under various conditions (by rating, winning certain titles, etc.), but those who don't "qualify" (except by age) are still welcome to play.

I guess the females have richer parents than the males. :-)

Young Nicholas went all that way to play Mikhail Egorov, say it ain't so. Congratulations to Team Canada. Good results for some and good experience for all.
