Any suggestions? I'm thinking of kids who know how the pieces move, but haven't any idea of what to do.

It would be nice to hear from parents on what their kids liked. I did a quick search:

I think large sites like chess.com may be overwhelming at first.

They are many chess puzzle sites like:
      http://www.ideachess.com/

      This old website is simple:
      http://www.chesskids.org.uk/chess.com/

I like the index of lessons, but cost will add up:
      https://learningchess.net/us/courses?cid=3

      A book of basic tactics:
      https://www.chesstactics.org/

      This looks nice:
      https://www.chessity.com/en

This playing site keeps coming up in recommendations:
      https://www.chesskid.com

Chess'n Math, Canada"s National Scholastic Organization, offers a FREE on-line magazine for kids...4 times a year written by NM Jeff Coakley (author of 4 exceptional chess books for kids...go to strategygames.ca and search for Coakley) ...the December issue is available at:

When was the last time that you looked at our mag Eric?

I would start with the CFC chess training manual that FIDE really likes or at least used to in the previous regime.

          http://chess.ca/sites/default/files/teaching-manual.pdf

The chess.ca newsfeed always seems to have interesting games often nicely annotated by John Upper:

I like Chess.com and chessbase.com which have lots of free material. Chesskid.com is very popular with the youngsters as well.

I enjoy the Elevate My Chess blog https://elevatemychess.com/

I actually read the December Scholars Mate yesterday and struggled to find one of the mate in ones. It has wonderful problems, but above basic lessons for beginners.

A shout out to Jeff Coakley who does wonderful books and articles (have you seen one of his books? - its a treat - very appealing to kids) and has done so for 30+ years. Long may you run! (to quote Jude Acers)

Unlike the snippets of wisdom in the Scholars Mate magazine, these great books are organized as a teaching manual and should be in every school's chess club.

An old review of Winning Chess Strategy for Kids:
