General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Very few chess events besides CYCC are such that one loss in the event and you get zero prizes but a plaque, and there are large costs to attend in most cases.

Yeah, the prize structure of tthe CYCC is winner gets $1,000, 2nd and 3rd get a plaque or trophy. I suppose that could be changed, winner gets $600, 2nd gets $400, something like that, but I'm not sure that's such a great idea.
Mr. Bilodeau, please get your facts straight. We should all be thankfull to Richard Bérubé who, despite the fact that he was on vacations, took the time to write up a press release and send it on the wire and that for a tournament he had nothing to do about. It was then picked up by The Gazette. We should also thank Mr Bruemmer who took the story further and wrote two great articles.

I congratulated Jean for his job in contacting the NEWPAPER BY HIMSELF.
I did not see the need to congratulate all the government employes of FQE paid with my taxes for taking vacations. Bravo for theses vacations. Do you want me to congratulate them to respond to questions asked by a Journalist that called them? Are you serious? If a journalist calls me after Jean Hébert succesfully contact him, I will not expect a Thank You card and flowers from Jean!! No, I will thank Jean for giving me this beautiful opportunity. I am not politician, I want the job done and I expect you to promote instead of doing politics.
Get to the facts, last month your new team at the head of FQE failed to accept a very good agreement with Chess'n Math for long games for kids. The members of your team were elected on the plan that you would do so. The reason of this NO from FQE is simply that you do not want to take the Chess'n Math rating for pairings when the kid has NO FQE rating and you want a copy of all Chess'n Math customers list and phones instead of placing a publicity on their website and magazine!!! This is politics on the back of my 5 childrens and I have no respect for such attitude.
Now you have announced a Quebec Youth Chess Championship without Chess'n Math which mean in Quebec that only 5% of kids in Quebec will get to know your tournament. Chess'n Math has hundreds of kids who will not hear about this ONLY long game Championship and probably only tournament in long game for kids under 12.
You may play politics or work for the whole chess community including Entreprenors, kids, elites, etc. You may try to fight parents or work for them. We had only 6 young Quebecers in the CYCC 2009 while Ontario had more than 50. This is no good for Quebec, no good for Ontario competition and no good for kids in Canada. It means that politics must stop right now.
Now Larry from Chess'n Math says on this thread that he met you recently and he is impressed with your willing to bring the whole community together, so I buy this and I congratulate you too. I want to be part of it if you work for Kids without politics. I have five kids.

Let's get the facts straight. I did not contact the newspaper myself. I rather sent a message to FQE manager Richard Bérubé, suggesting him to send a press release through a network that reaches all media. Despite the fact that Richard was on vacation, he interrupted it to do the job. On this, one star for Mr Bérubé. But without me asking, nothing would have happened. This is something to change. Sending press releases is cheap and potentially very rewarding for chess.
However, regarding the FQE's website, things did not go so smoothly. It took eight days to update it and briefly mention the results of the Canadian Championship, despite the fact that I took the time to enter my own games (which had not been done by the organizer...) and send them along with a couple of pictures, less than 48 hours after the end of the Closed.
The fact is that during Richard's vacation, the FQE who depends much too heavily on one person, was disorganised and could not get the work done.
Regarding the CFC and the Closed organizer, well, I am afraid that exactly nothing was done. I suppose that I should have called them too...

This is like driving past a bad car accident. I don't want to look but I can't help myself.
Yesterday I was looking at the pairings for the Montreal International event. There seem to be enough Americans to stage an invasion. Did they invite the new Champion of Canada? It would be a good spot to try to get a GM norm.
There is 4 places for the 4 finalists of the Quebec Invitational (Kovalyov, Bluvshtein, Roussel-Roozmon and Bhat). The rest of the GMs have been chosed and invited by André Langlois.
It would have been a good tournament for a norm, but Jean Hébert didn't play in the CIQ.

The Quebec Championship ended in january and Jean was the Champion. 5 month later there is a new Quebec Championship!! Probably Jean did not attend since it was a shame to be a Champion for 5 months. Any World Beauty Champion would have been upset.
Now since he did not attend at the June Championship, he can not make it to this International Event and the organizers of this beautiful event are right. It is the june Quebec Championship that was the problem in my opinion. Politics!
But it is never too late. Everybody would understand! The guy has been there for 30 years. He just decided to become GrandMaster and we know he can make it. Plus he is the Canada Champion. There is a GM commenting the games, this guy could play against Jean in round 1.

Well, why don't you contact André Langlois? He cannot change the whole tournament like that one day before it begins.... We need to be realistics. If Jean would play against the GM commenting the games, who would comment? Maybe should Empressa pay another GM?
And I think it is a round-robin tournament. With 2 mores players it couldn't work...

Carl,
The TIM has been set up for months and invitations accepted. Thanks for trying but it is too late to change it unless someone unexpectedly fails to show up. Even if that happens and I get an invitation just hours before the start of the event, it would put me in a tough spot. Playing in such a strong event without any specific preparation is no picnic.

Well I have two extra chairs and a chess set and one clock here. I have a pen to edit the round-robin too. All the problems are gone. :p
