Summary of 2019 Oakville Open

The 2nd annual Oakville Open

The tournament happened over the weekend of Jan 25-27, 2019. Fortunately, the weather was not too bad.

Please find the summary :

1. As usual, all the rounds started on time under the guidance of IA Danny Goldenberg. Thanks to him everything went pretty smooth for the 3 days event.

2. More than 130 players in 6 sections.

3. GM Bator had a pretty easy time cruising with 4.5 points - 1 point more than the 2nd place winner ( tied by 3 players at 3.5 points )

4. 4 players had perfect scores of 5 points in U2100/U1800/U1500 and U900 sections.

5. 31 winners pocketing a total of $ 7,910 of prize money

We would like to thank IA Danny Goldenberg and assistant Mikhail Egorov for running the show and all the players and parents for making the tournament a great success again.

Bator finished alone in first in the Championship section...yet he won less than a U2100, a U1800, and a U1500 player?

Hi Hugh: Gary will answer......but I think it has to do with there being a top-up "perfect score" addition to the normal first place prize.

If I recall the advertising correctly, the prize money was based on score, not on place. So, 5 points, got $x, 4½ got $y, etc.

This phenomenon has been noted for other tournaments (mainly large Opens in the U.S. if I recall correctly) where there often is a multi-way tie for top places among several GMs/IMs whereas a lone winner of the Uxxxx section can scoop a lot of money. I guess that is the way it shakes out. I am not a GM but I have to wonder if it makes them wonder too about that sort of arrangement and possibly limit the attraction for GMs. In fact, anyone rated above the highest Uxxxx section (say > 2100) has to compete with all the GMs and IMs and are almost sure to win nothing at all.

I'd guess you'd have to find the USA tournaments that Gary used his model from and see how many of the top guns got the big money.

The prize distribution was in the advertising, so it is up to the individual player to decide if he wants to participate. The 130 players were voting with their feet, and wallets. I don't think the Guelph Pro-Am gets that many players.
