General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
ZONAL & Easter Sectionals - updated registration list
Congratulations to Joshua Doknjas for the best start ever for a number 18 seed! Win against GM Bareev and draw against IM Samsomkin. May you continue in that vein and get the IM title!
Thanks to Aris and team for organizing this tournament. Great venue and lots of efforts put in by the team.
Although it is only round 1 so far, i felt that this will be a great tournament handled by Canada top 3 arbiters.
It is a great pity for those who can't make it to this tournament ( really ) .......
Cheers to Chess in Canada
Gary, thank you for the kind words!
Things seem to be going well, and the continuing extending hospitality from the hotel continues to impress.
Our U2200 section will now probably be an odd number of players for the rest of the tournament, so we could really use a strong local player - you could get 6 free rated rounds!
If interested, please email/text me as soon as feasible. Round 4 pairings probably ready by 9pm-10pm.
Yes, it's a Zonal. The winner qualifies for the next World Cup. Norm/title opportunities are the same for every Zonal since 2015:
1. 1st equal - IM title.
2. 2nd or 3rd - IM norm.
3. 65% (6 points) - FM title.
4. 50% (4.5 points) - CM title.
Is there a playoff for one FM title, or do all the players with 6 points get one?
I wondered how many players have obtained fide titles from the Canadian Closed. In the modern era of Swiss events, there have been 44 players (19%) who have scored 6 and most already were titled. Trying to figure it out from David Cohen's research at www.canadianchess.info
IM Titles from Canadian Closed
(3 players got the IM title for 6 pts in 1999:
David Ross 1999
Michael Schleifer 1999
Thanh Nha Duong 1999
Arthur Calugar 2011
Eric Lawson 2004
Vicente Lee Jr. 2006 (6.5 points)
Nikolay Noritsyn 2007
Jonathan Tayar 2009
Richard Wang 2012
FM titles from Canadian Closed
Aman Hambleton 2009
David Herder 2002
Louise Jiang 2009
Nikita Gusev 2012
Eric Lawson 2002
Christian Stevens 2004
(In 1999 it looks like top players with 4.5 points got FM titles
Nigel Fullbrook 1999
Hans Jung 1999
Marat Khassanov 1999
Stephen Glinert 1999
Ioan Crisan 1999
Others with 6/9 who haven't won the FM title (Lost playoff as only two awarded):
Robert J. Gardner 2002
Dale Haessel 2006

Reason: Added FMs Herder and Hambleton
Nope. Too tough opposition. Zachery Dukic, who defeated GM Kaiqui Yang, needed to draw his last round game with an IM. He will get lots of rating points.
There were multiple people with 4.5+ who got CM: Zachary Dukic, Sergey Noritsyn, Rejean Tremblay, Max Rusonik, Ananda Saha, Hugues Masse, Hou Ji Yao, and William Li. Congratulations!

Although the big guns dominated the top of the crosstable, the lower players could get personal victories in terms of upsets and rating gains.
Zachery Dukic (defeating GM Yang) had the highest performance rating over his FIDE rating. And he had played in Italy and Philadelphia in the last year. But his performance rating was below his CFCs.
Joshua Doknjas (defeating GM Bareev) had his performance rating higher than his CFCs, as were Tremblay and Saha.
Réjean Tremblay score with FMs was +2=3-0, Tyler Tanaka scored even against FMs +1=3-1. Several of the players had their FIDE rating way below their CFC, and so we would expect them to be among those who gained the most FIDE rating points.
Others with 6/9 who haven't won the FM title (Lost playoff or non-zonal year? Minimum rating requirement?):
Robert J. Gardner 2002
Dale Haessel 2006
David Herder 2002
Robert Patterson 2002
Jeff Reeve 2002
Sergei Sokourinski 2002
The regulations at the time were different: 2/3 or better result for an IM and 50% or better for an FM, with the stricture for an open Swiss that only one IM and two FM titles were available. In 2002 Stephen Glinert earned the IM, Dave Herder and Eric Lawson the FM.
Huge congrats to Mark Plotkin who managed the IM norm despite having to overcome his own creative openings and the pressure of hundreds of students watching at home :) Looking forward to seeing the last norm!
