Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Top six players (determined by CFC rating) will play a round robin tournament. Note that only players that do not require any byes are eligible.
All other players will play a Swiss tournament.
We reserve the right to combine, or otherwise modify, the sections if necessary.
Entry Fee: $40 all players, $10 discount for juniors (under 17 years) and seniors (65 years or older). Cash only at site (ATM available).
Preregistration must be submitted by email to edthompson@netflash.net (cc kwchessclub@gmail.com) by April 25 to avoid the late fee. Payment to be made before 9:45 a.m. on tournament day at the site.
Late registration – Before 9:30 a.m. on tournament day at the site. A $10 late fee will be charged.
Miscellaneous:
Clocks and sets will be supplied.
Several restaurants are near the site.
Parking is available street side and underground at the site. Parking fees apply.

Hi John,
Unfortunately we do not plan ahead and that is the only rent/arbiter combination for this time period (as you know we even cancelled our long-running Spring Regular this year). I would like to see higher attendance everywhere and will push harder to avoid conflicts.

I post my tournament a year in advance, so that I can guarantee my weekend. I have also looked around to make sure no one else has booked that weekend.
If you don't want a conflict, don't run a tournament on the weekend already scheduled.
It seems that you want to run a tournament and therefore ran one anyways. Your actions are different than what you say.
I don't mean to get angry, but there are other options.
I think the biggest culprit is the Ontario Chess Association. At one time you could have confidence in this organization and all Organizers respected other Organizers. Then One Year we had two Organizers running tournaments the same weekend. Vucko vs Dutton Easter Weekend and Kitchener vs Toronto Labour Day Open.
Last Year there was a low turnout at the Kitchener Chess Festival because another group ran a tournament shortly after.
It seems to me that some organizers want all the spotlight attention and they want to push out the established Organizers that have been running tournaments for 15+ years. Aurora has set a tournament for years in the spring yet the Mississauga Chess club runs a tournament a few weeks before.As far as I know Mississauga runs tournaments in the winter. If the OCA does not monitor tournaments and allow established organizers who book sites more than a year in advance To have priority bookings then you'll more than likely lose all organizers. Prices will go up as those who are running tournaments will have a monopoly and you will see a decline in local events. If that is what the OCA wants then good luck to them. I live in Ontario yet I have never been asked by the OCA voting on what the players of Ontario want. Northern Ontario has basically been left out of Ontario loop for years . Why is that? It is because the OCA does not see past SWOC ECOA and GTA (W) . It is really time that we dissolve the OCA and let the CFC book Organizer tournaments and if there is a conflicting tournament then you don't rate it.
I know that the Niagara Falls Open is a smaller tournament. I know that we draw a minimal amount of players from the Kitchener/Waterloo area. I do know it's an hour and a half to two hour drive to come to Niagara Falls. I've been to tournaments there and do like Ed Thompson!!
But to say that you care about other tournaments is a LIE!! I tried to be nice, but if you really cared, you would run your tournament on another day.
Kitchener and Guelph get the most players to their tournaments because they are in the center of SWOCL and players have quicker access via travel time than most other areas. If you run a tournament opposite other parts of SWOCL, you are saying that we aren't as important as your area. Like I said before, actions speak louder than words.
I work nights and weekends and am limited in the amount of tournaments I can run and play in. By running your event, you are hurting other organizers and make it to the point that running a tournament outside the hub of SWOCL, isn't worthwhile. You are hurting players from those areas.
Hope you have a successful tournament, but it's guaranteed that I will never play in one of yours because of your contempt for other areas of SWOCL.

I have been to your tournaments a couple of time and was intending to attend your tournament but alas, this year tournament is restricted to over age 19 and above. Otherwise, you will have additional 3 players more. Thanks for organizing tournaments all these years at Niagara Falls. I am sure players appreciate your efforts

We chose our format this year because the site is too small, due to recent renovations, to service a large amount of Juniors ,parents and siblings. The majority of Participants in the past have been Adults and because we are moving to a bigger site in 2020 we felt that our final year at the Shrine Hall should be for the adults only. Our new site will be available again for all ages.
