  • CFC Membership hits 2,500!

Things are certainly looking much better from those bleak years when the CFC had no real leadership. Vlad has a focus on kid chess so I assume that is why the numbers have improved . The CYCC provides significant membership revenues for the CFC.

    Here are the stats:

    Hi,

I think this is great (for the CFC), but for the Life Memberships I do wonder...
a - How many of these are titled players (IMs, GMs, awarded life membership automatically).
b - How many total life members are active?

The vast majority of players I come across are not life members (easily 80%+ if not 90%+), and I have to worry about checking their memberships.

You may also wonder how many life members are still alive. I think all the Quebec ones are still living.

I like the stories of Bernard Freedman, Daniel MacAdam, and Lynn Stringer. Some of the heroes of Canadian chess. Never met them (sadly) but was told about them. They are amongst the life members. Important history. I think Lynn Stringer is still alive and I wish her all the best.

I am active (but in diminished capacity) I hope to keep going for a long time.

The following list has everyone in the CFC database.

              http://chess.ca/sites/default/files/tdlist.txt

Living Life or Honorary members have an expiry date that looks like 2099/XX/XX. I think any deceased Life members before we were computerized were not brought over, and any Life or Honorary members that pass away now, have their expiry date altered. Maybe some of you with time on your hands can prune the list of Life Members for us. It's probably easier to know about the Honorary members passing away. At one time life members could be identified by their CFC number, ie mine used to be 145 and then became 100145 when we computerized, but I'm not sure if we are still assigning numbers that way - I suspect that if you become a life member you now keep your existing cfc number.

I hope the CFC doesn't delete deceased and inactive players like the FQE did for a while...they also recycled membership numbers. Of course...this made a mess of cross tables...showing blank and incorrect player names.

497 keen players became life members with an expiry of 1/12/2099 or 31/12/2099

255 of them are oldtimers, starting with membership number 100 (to 100357) Vranesic has 10100. I bought mine in 1978 (with my first paycheck), #100196.

Only 218 have a FIDE number, indicating that likely half haven't played in the past decade.

So I looked at the CFC rating page for the 258 Ontario lifers and their last tournament (not scrolling down for actives) was:
                        2019 59
2018 31 so I would say that 35% are active.

"Dead," or sitting in a senior's home waiting for a chess volunteer to come by:
                        61 24% , include up to 2009 122 48% clearly inactive.

59 of these 61 have membership numbers that start with 100. 50% of those 120 members starting with 100 are "dead," only 15 (13%) are active.

Lowest numbers across Canada are: 100005 Charles Birch, Victoria BC. 100007 Keith Kerns, Toronto. 100020 I.J.Dremen, Winnipeg. 100027 Phil Haley (deceased). 100030 David Jackson, London ON.

Phil Haley has an expiry date of 01/12/2099 - the same as many living Life members. Is he included in the Ontario totals?

Some of the "100's" have "normal" expiry dates in the 1990's or 2000's. Some numbers are skipped - e.g. 100100, 100102, and 100103. Do we assume that they are deceased and were inactive before online crosstables were available? Or were these numbers accidentally skipped? (I am 100101 - bought mine in the mid 70's).
