FIDE launches a project to support chess veterans

    23 April 2019

Following a decision of the 4th Presidential Board meeting 2018, the International Chess Federation is pleased to announce the continuation of its support to chess veterans with an exceptional budget of an annual total of 50,000 euros.

From this fund, 30,000 will be allocated to increase the prize funds in this year's Individual World Seniors Championships 50+ and 65+ (open and women). The remaining 20,000 will go to individual nominees: anyone over 65 years old, who has contributed to the development of chess and who is in an unstable financial situation, is entitled to receive this support. Applications including a CV can be sent, personally or on behalf of somebody else, to the FIDE Secretariat office@fide.com, until May 15th, 2019.

More details to be announced in approximately two weeks.

Perhaps Seniors would be a better word...but yes...I like this :). I just googled it...Veteran...yes it is someone who has a long experience in a particular field...but I think Veteran has a military connotation...which is also mentioned in the description of the word :)

The NATO Chess Championship allows retired military members to play under the NATO flag in their annual tournament. When Canada hosted in Quebec in 2014, we fielded an all-Canadian veterans team as well as a regular team. We won a trophy for best sportsmanship or something like that.
