General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Banff Open 2019 Nov 9-11 Open for Entries - 1st 100 only
We are now up to 65 advanced entries with 8 players rated over 2300. Ian Zhao has now become a FM and the Alberta Open Champion since our last update and is now the number 2 seed!
If any IM's or GM's are interested in playing, there is still one room left at the site, that I can get for a special rate (email me at ianfindlay2314@gmail.com ). Don't forget you cannot enter at the site. Entries close at midnight November 7 or when 100 players have entered. Here are some reasons to enter now
** Strongest field ever
** Largest prize fund ever
** Our tournament room this year is the prestigious ball room., where the Banff Midsummer's Ball is held each year
** Dinner reception at the President's Mansion on Sunday Nov 10, is the best chess party in North America.
Go to website in order to enter or to view the pre registration list http://www.albertachess.org/home/sch...19-banff-open/

Only 22 spots left and last minute entries seem to be pouring in. We have just matched last years entries of 78. We will have a record prize fund for Banff Open, which now stands at $3500, with a potential $4500, if someone goes 6-0 and wins the $1000 Fischer prize. The entries seem to be coming in faster now, so first come first serve, but I will let you know quickly when we reach 100.
Also if we reach 100 entries, we get another $100 added to prize fund from SoCA.
Ian tells me we are around 82 to 84 advance entries now -- so less than 18 places remain available! These are the 82 I have so far: SwissSys Standings. 2019 Banff Open: 2019 Banff Open - OPEN SECTION

SwissSys Standings. 2019 Banff Open: 2019 Banff Open - UNDER 1800 SECTION
Just tossed $100.00 your way. We want it all to go to the U1800 section :)
Grow those roots bro ;)
And if you ever ever ... like as if 'ever' get to that magic 100 registered ...we're there for you too with another C note ...ha.
peace.
n.
Thanks Neil, that is very generous of you and the Society of Chess Aficionados (SoCA). We need 15 more. You offer of the magic $100, certainly adds to the suspense! Thank you for your continued support over our first four years. I was playing in LA this weekend, they had about 35 players with 2 weeks to register and ended up with over 200! It seems the norm to enter last minute in the US, but one has to plan to come to Banff, so I am only expected about 90. Still up from 78 from last year and the advance payments should mean we will not get the 20 last minute withdrawals!
Nov 7 at midnight is the deadline. No last minute entries, as we will be doing pairings in advance. Only 15 spots left
Now up to 87 entries. With the $500 added to first prize, this puts the prize fund over $4000 and if someone wins the Fischer prize in the top section for a 6-0, then over $5000.
The 1st prize if someone had a 6-0 would be at least $2600. $1100 (1st) + $500 (Armageddon) + $1000 (Fischer) Nov 7 at midnight is the deadline. No last minute entries, as we will be doing pairings in advance. Only 13 spots left

Our record prize fund, which if you add the $500 Armageddon prize, is over $4000. If someone goes 6-0, the prize fund will be over $5000. Not bad for a weekend event.
The 4th round started with 4 perfect scores. Mark Ginsburg and Belsar Valencia drew on board 2. Bitan Banerjee and Agnieszka Matra-Clement are battling on board 1 with perfect scroes.
Updates are on Mark Dutton's Facebook page and later updates at the Alberta Chess Association webpage. www.albertachess.org

Many thanks to Ian for organizing and Mark and Christine for directing yet another prestigious Banff Open! Was a pleasure to take part in it for a third consecutive year.
