    Round Ten

    Early Games

Daniel Rensch in his online blog discussed the Hansen – Saric game from yesterday and heaped all sorts of praise on Eric for taking a chance in the opening. Evidently he and Eric analyzed the game into the night, when the latter should have been getting his beauty sleep. I have been unable to see the analysis in print. If someone finds it, please post in this thread.

From yesterday’s play, John Saunders has posted this:

Wang Hao’s missed chance against Vitiugov in Round 9.

72….Kf6!! is the only way to win

Fiona’s question of the day is this:

Whose story has been the most inspiring so far at the Isle of Man?

I wish Robert Hess would play more. His games are entertaining more often almost then any other player. I ve been privileged to see his commentary at the Kingside Diner in St Louis but he is an even better player than commentator. Today the sequence of pins from move 27 is a spectacular way to simplify the game to a basic winning endgame.

You might suppose that Anand overlooked his back rank but the position was bad way before that. Maybe even before exchange of queens. I think somehow (unless White had kingside chances) he was strategically busted. (look at the bad queenside pawns and white lacks a good pawn lever)

Theres a must see game Amin-Sadhwani. Black grabs the pawn e2 with his bishop. Now its not so much that White has the E file. Its also that whites pieces come in so fast. I love graphic lessons like this game.

The Artemiev game - mysterious endgame. From move 32 to 38 the evals climb for White and then they fall dramatically. Where did White go wrong?

In the Sasikiran game the queens knight is the star of the show. Watch as it hops around the board (from A to H and back again) creating advantages where ever it goes (outposts, forks, discovered attacks, you name it) Chess sometimes is humorous.

Its also nice to see young freshly minted grandmasters get their lessons as Nihal Sarin in this round. Two bishops sometimes isnt enough and his opponent grinds him down mercilessly in the endgame.

Its extra icing on the cake when great tournaments produce more young grandmasters as in this tournament which Wayne points out above.

Kasimdzanov - Howell is a more obvious king hunt for those that like that sort of thing.
