Im currently enjoying Rakhmanov's king hunt. Exquisite torture. Play to the endgame - why not?

Round Nine
Early Games
Two new grandmasters. These postings tell all.
- It was enough for 13-year-old Sadhwani's opponent to turn up for him to earn the grandmaster title today, but it did no harm to beat former European Champion Alexander Motylev as well!
- Congratulations to 14-year-old Vincent Keymer on finally becoming a grandmaster after so many near misses in the past!
__________
Raunak Sadhwani is India’s 65th grandmaster.
While I was typing this, Fiona had Jonas Buhl Bjerre in. He passed his GM norm yesterday and so is now the youngest Danish grandmaster (15 years old).
Fiona’s daily question:
Is it strange that @MagnusCarlsen & @FabianoCaruana were allowed to play in this event while they are not playing to qualify for the Candidates’ tournament?
Comments from viewers
- Yes, strange since they could influence who qualify to the candidates. It’s not about whether one think they would do such a thing or not, but about eliminating speculation if any unexpected result should arise in the end.
- Why not, they are entitled to win GBP 70000 like others.
- It's not at all strange. It honors both the players that they accept the invitation and the challenge. And their participation crowns this wonderful tournament. As all players accepting the invitation doing their part in making it happen and making it as big + unique as it is.
- Considering if they come top 2 and the candidates spot going to the player who comes 3rd it doesn’t really matter i guess
- If I wanted to qualify for the candidates, win and become world champion, I might as well start by defeating him and Caruana in IOM!
- I don't think it is strange. This can actually boost the popularity of the event. Having both top 2 players in the world playing in this tournament makes it more competitive and I love watching it
- As much as i am undecided over the question.
I would still like to ask this :
Would each one of us who is supporting C&C's participation be okay if C&C intentionally lose to a 2500 player in the final round , giving that player a seat over let’s say Aronian or Hikaru ?
- The tournament shouldn't be reduced to the function of qualifying for the Candidates Tournament. It's a great tournament in its own right, with prizes, rating adjustments, fun, and more. Qualification isn't relevant for C&C, but the rest is -- why not let them play?

Abasov - Sjugirov In the end the black king gets trapped and results in a picturesque pawn checkmate.

Vidit's two piece sacrifice (actually technically a rook sacrifice) leads to very interesting play.

Sadhwani - Motylev Black allows White to keep the knights and they end up having a field day.

Demchenko - L'Ami black knights carry the play with alot of help from White.

When I saw the matchup Shankland - Hess I thought this will be a thriller and it is! Look at the black knights perform.

Anton attacked with vigor but missed the zwischenzug (in between move) tickler 18...cxb2 which would have kept all his pawns together. Now we'll see if Levon can grind the position.

Peter Doggers - By the time the 18th move had been reached, the chief arbiter Alex Holowczak decided to end this little comedy and move one of the games, Shirov-Yu, to the other playing hall. From that moment the games immediately deviated, with White doing well in both but eventually only Karjakin won, while Shirov drew.
Holowczak made an appearance on Chess.com's live broadcast, and he made it clear that he did not suspect anyone of wrongdoing.
"In particular I saw Yu Yangyi sort of look quite nervous when he [looked] over to Dreev, who made a move maybe a minute or so before," said Holowczak. "So I thought in the interest of everybody feeling comfortable with the game it was better to just move it to the second hall so that nobody can accuse anyone of anything."

In terms of standings, the more important story was Anton's upset victory over Grischuk. Not only was Grischuk the favorite in this game, but the way he lost was surprising as well.
The win was largely based on preparation, as Anton revealed afterward.
Anton: "My trainer [IM David Martinez –PD] had been analyzing it during the night. I checked it in the morning for one hour more."
When Grischuk deviated from his preparation, Anton spent a full hour on his 15th move, and on the next move he sacrificed a piece after just 19 seconds. Soon White was completely winning. Impressive stuff by the 24-year-old Spaniard.
