              Round Eight

Hans, do you play over the games in your head or by chessboard/engine-monitor?

Leonard Barden’s column this week is about a Carlsen-Caruana showdown.

Wayne, those are complex grandmaster games. I usually follow on chessbomb and skim thru games looking for exciting or exceptional ones. Ive got a good tactical sniffer and some positional awareness so I leave most of the games alone and only post if I think they are exciting or exceptional. I do see the engine evals but I look closer and try to work things out for myself (but only with the interesting games) So I click thru them, click and pause and think (on the chessbomb platform) and sometimes play out the tactical variations to confirm. and sometimes I dont have enough information as in many of the games are home preparation (and how far that extends into the game). I also miss a fair number of games.

Leonard Barden is a great writer of chess columns. Its about having access to all the news info, knowing what to write, using good description but also only writing what is necessary. (and of course always keeping it interesting). Thats not easy, I used to write a column.

Peter Doggers - By the time the 18th move had been reached, the chief arbiter Alex Holowczak decided to end this little comedy and move one of the games, Shirov-Yu, to the other playing hall. From that moment the games immediately deviated, with White doing well in both but eventually only Karjakin won, while Shirov drew.

Holowczak made an appearance on Chess.com's live broadcast, and he made it clear that he did not suspect anyone of wrongdoing.

"In particular I saw Yu Yangyi sort of look quite nervous when he [looked] over to Dreev, who made a move maybe a minute or so before," said Holowczak. "So I thought in the interest of everybody feeling comfortable with the game it was better to just move it to the second hall so that nobody can accuse anyone of anything."

                      ________

In terms of standings, the more important story was Anton's upset victory over Grischuk. Not only was Grischuk the favorite in this game, but the way he lost was surprising as well.

The win was largely based on preparation, as Anton revealed afterward.

Anton: "My trainer [IM David Martinez –PD] had been analyzing it during the night. I checked it in the morning for one hour more."

When Grischuk deviated from his preparation, Anton spent a full hour on his 15th move, and on the next move he sacrificed a piece after just 19 seconds. Soon White was completely winning. Impressive stuff by the 24-year-old Spaniard.
