    - Daniil Dubov shows you don't need to play Fischer Random to put your pawns on h5 and g5 by move 6!

Olimpiu Urcan - After the drawn game, Alexander Moiseenko mentioned 5...g5 was a novelty for him and he was afraid of selecting the obvious main line that starts with 7.Nxe4 dxe4 8.h4 fearing some "computer preparation" in the 8...e5 line.

In Germany – Azerbaijan, Meier – Guseinov goes 117 moves to a draw but Fridman beats Mamedov for Germany to win the match. They are now in sole 2nd place behind Russia.

Christopher Kreuzer - Interesting twists at the end of Luke and Gawain's wins (in Luke's game, the win could have slipped away). The two knights beating the two bishops in Gawain's game is a nice one.

Tim Harding - Luke's opponent defended the final phase of the RvB endgame well until the blunder 107 f6?? when 107 Bd6 or Bb8 could still hold according to the tablebase. Presumably White was very short of time; nobody would like to have to defend that one.

The turnaround in Gawain's game was impressive because he was probably losing around moves 20-26. Knightmares for White in the final phase indeed.

        Round Seven

The top match of the round was Germany – Russia, which at one time it looked like Germany might win. Two games from that:

        - Daniil Dubov wins an absolutely stunning game where he drove the black king from g8 before mating it on a3!

        - Germany-Russia is an exciting battle at the top table of the European Team Championship - Dubov is winning after 13.h5! but Nisipeanu has good chances of beating Vitiugov if he plays 22.e6!

Olimpiu Urcan - Another masterpiece by Daniil Dubov. With the publicity Fischer Random chess currently gets, it is as if he's on a mission to prove there's still plenty of room for originality, creativity and entertainment in the game as we know it for fifteen centuries.

Gawain Jones wins the match for England

                      From the EC Forum:

                      - Anyway, very well done England! It sounds like nothing special when you say that the second seeds finished 3rd, but the margins are so slim between the top dozen or so sides that in reality this was yet another terrifically powerful showing by our very impressive team.

                      - Thin margins all right. The top four all made exactly the same number of gamepoints!!

                      - Three events without Nigel Short: three excellent results. Coincidence? I am sure that Malcolm couldn't possibly comment.
