To everyone who has registered but not yet paid, and especially so if you're booking a hotel room through our tournament, please note that the first wave of hotel room reservations will be made after this coming weekend. Therefore, please e-transfer me the amount from our registration email thread by Monday, March 9th.

If you feel you need to send me a security question answer, I recommend TEXT vs. email. If you do so, please start the text with the player(s) name, thanks!

Thank you, best regards, Aris Marghetis.

P.S. if you miss this Monday, that's not the end of the world, but rooms will eventually run out (and there's also the increase in prices after the end of March)

Good morning, if you feel that your name should already be on the "first 90" list above, but it isn't, then it's probably because I had emailed you requesting some last bit of information (i.e. cell number, number of people for free breakfasts, etc). Then that email would be sitting in my "waiting for more information" pile lol. Please reply to that to complete your registration. I will of course honour the pre-March rates if you initiated your registration before March. arismarghetis at rogers dot com

My understanding is that participants in the Zonal need to be living in Canada,
and non-Canadian-flags are ineligible for prizes that require the Canadian flag.

N.B. the special "pre-registration" deadline for last year's players will expire at midnight tonight. I don't need your money yet, I just want your registration by email. That'll hold the rates for you.

    (search emails from me)

    Thanks, regards, Aris.

Hello Andrei, thanks for your post.

Re rating eligibility for the Canadian Closed, that will for sure be >=2200!
Re rating eligibility for the Canada Women Zonal, there is no restriction (this could change, but I doubt it)
Re "payment via e-mail", I mean INTERAC e-transfer. I suspect that's not available via American banks?

Please feel free to ask any other questions, it likely helps other people too to see the resulting answers.

Thanks, regards, Aris (out of town for four days, hope to catch up to all email by sometime tomorrow)

Just a quick note that byes are available for any round:

    - in the U2200/U1900/U1600 sections, if requested with registration, up to 3 half-point byes, within rounds 1-7
    - all other requested byes will be 0-point (therefore, all Zonal and Closed byes will be 0-point)

    Thanks, Aris.

(65 players registered, 3 GMs & 2 IMs/WGMs, 182 room nights booked, French translation being posted)

At the other end, the oldest players, some of them have been over 2200 for many years, maybe even have a FM title, but may have recently dipped under 2200. Some active players bounce back and forth, over and under 2200. There is an argument for inclusion if they apply. The rigid rules could be broken for a couple of exceptional cases, but then the flood gates might open with "what about my child?"

Chess should a perfect rule based world, just follow the rules, the only exception should be if the rule not make any sense (or the rule was wrong), then we can discuss to change the rule. Section design and play up rule is the right of organizer, stay with it and it's same for everyone.

We are looking at FIDE and CFC ratings (and FQE if from Quebec). That's what we feel is right for this event. And people seem generally supportive of this.

It is a balencing act. We want more entries but to not water down the top section.

Players travel far and the improving kids want free chess lessons. But the masters have also travelled far to meet other strong players, some who they haven't played before. Every game for them should be worthwhile. It will affect the final standings while some masters battle each other to draws, a few other masters will get a couple of rounds of easy points.

A parent would have to provide evidence of the ability to play at master level. For example, in smaller regions the ratings are lower. Could also look at provincial and national youth champions.
