  • sad news - Andre Zybura passing

Just found out - sadly - that Andre Zybura passed away March 12. I dont know how long I knew Andre - much more than 20 yrs but he was always a source of chess pleasure and inspiration for me. Team mates on many different teams and always meeting at tournaments he loved to share anecdotes and stories. Andre was an avid attacking player - his joy lay in the attack and counterattack. https://erbgood.com/tribute/details/.../obituary.html

Sorry to hear of Andre's passing. I shared an apartment with Andre and Michael Dougherty at Reykjavik 2017. I enjoyed hearing his world view,

Very sad news. Andre was a friendly and interesting person that I met at many tournaments. He was a good attacking player and went in just one direction when playing chess - forward! At the 2014 Canadian Seniors he caught me in one of his tactics and I was relieved to escape with a draw. He played in the 2019 Canadian 65+ Championship and placed 3rd with 5/7, despite his serious condition. Rest in peace.

Andre came to me before the game and said: Im playing Cummings and if I win you will get first. I will try to make things very interesting. (accompanied by a wink) Im thinking sure you'll try but David Cummings is a heck of a player. So I was keeping a close eye on the game and sure enough to my amazed eyes it looked like Andre was winning. I couldnt contain my euphoria and with my nervousness I left the room. When I came back and had a look it still looked good for Andre but I could see defensive resources and that the better player would draw. I had hopes but your accurate play saved the game. Thanks to Andre for making it interesting.

I didn't know Andre well but I do remember his love of the game. At a tournament in Brantford in the late '90s, Andre would do laps around the outside of the building between rounds.to clear the cobwebs. As he walked he read Mednis's How Karpov Wins. I could hear him laughing once or twice every lap as his delight at some move by Karpov overtook him.
