    Chess24 Legends of Chess

    https://chess24.com/en/read/news/che...e82d-161154725

World Champion Magnus Carlsen will be joined by his great predecessors Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik for the chess24 Legends of Chess, the 4th and final event before the Grand Final of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour. Boris Gelfand, Vasyl Ivanchuk, Peter Leko and Peter Svidler are the other legends invited to take part alongside qualifiers Anish Giri, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren.

The event runs from Tuesday July 21st to Wednesday August 5th.

The chess24 Legends of Chess is a 10-player super-tournament with a twist. The four semi-finalists of the Chessable Masters — Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Anish Giri — received an automatic invite, making the tournament’s top seeds four hungry Top 10 players in the prime of their chess careers, aged 26-30.

Up against them are six legends aged 40-52, who have been at the top of world chess for two and in some cases well over three decades (the age here is when the event begins — Nepo's birthday is tomorrow!).

    The Field

    Magnus Carlsen
    Ding Liren
    Ian Nepomniachtchi
    Anish Giri
    Vishy Anand
    Vladimir Kramnik
    Peter Svidler
    Vasyl Ivanchuk
    Boris Gelfand
    Peter Leko

    Format

The chess24 Legends of Chess will begin with a 10-player round-robin preliminary stage played over the first 9 days, with each match best of four 15+10 rapid games. If tied 2:2 we’ll get an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw means Black wins the match. There are 3 points for a win without Armageddon, while if the match goes to Armageddon the winner gets 2 points and the loser 1.

The top 4 then go forward to a knockout, with the semi-finals and final played as best of 3 sets, and each set a 4-game rapid match. The only difference to the preliminary stage clashes is that if a match finishes 2:2 there will also be two 5+3 blitz games before Armageddon.
    __________

The longer preliminary stage in the Legends ensures that we’ll get to see matches between all the participants, including the World Championship rematches Carlsen-Anand and Kramnik-Anand as well as matches we’d have loved to have seen such as Carlsen-Kramnik and Kramnik-Ivanchuk.

The total prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for the winner.

      Preliminaries

Jan Gustafsson and Rustam Kasimdzhanov are the main commentators. Rustam was the long-time second to Viswanathan Anand – helping him in the 2008, 2010 and 2012 World Championship matches. He is up on modern theory, being a second to Caruana. He partners well with Jan.

Interestingly, Carlsen is playing aboard a boat. When questioned by Tania about this, he pulled aside the curtain behind him and there was the sea. He gave no details though.

I can’t remember another time where someone was playing from a ship. I think that in Stefan Zweig’s Chess – a group of passengers on a cruise ship challenge the world chess champion to a match.

Rd 4 I found Chucky's King Gambit - the opening, the exchange into the endgame, and the endgame play just lovely! (and at rapid time controls, no less!)

I also really enjoyed the knight play in Magnus - Giri (rd 4).

Ding - Gelfand was surprising and humourous.

Vishy - what a blunder! (of course Black was winning!)

            Good entertainment all round.

              Preliminaries

              Round Two

In Round One, the matches started with only one match delayed – Ivanchuk – Leko. This from Colin McGourty:

This match got off to a rocky start, since for the first 20 minutes Vasyl lived up to his absent-minded genius reputation by sitting oblivious with the wrong tab open on his computer, failing to respond to increasingly frantic messages from the arbiters. Eventually communication was re-established with Planet Chucky, however, and the game could start normally, if delayed. By the end of that encounter it was Vasyl pressing for a win, but no more.

              https://chess24.com/en/read/news/che...n-svidler-lead

Recently, Ivanchuk has preferred Vasyl to Vassily for his first name.

I mentioned Chess Story/The Royal Game by Stefan Zweig yesterday because the world champion was on a ship at sea.

An excerpt from the first two paragraphs:

ON THE great passenger steamer, due to depart New York for Buenos Aires at midnight, there was the usual last-minute bustle and commotion. Visitors from shore shoved confusedly to see their friends off, telegraph boys in cocked caps dashed through the lounges shouting names, trunks and flowers were carried past, and inquisitive children ran up and down the companionways, the orchestra playing imperturbably on deck all the while. As I was standing a bit apart from this hubbub, talking on the promenade deck with an acquaintance of mine, two or three flashbulbs flared near us— apparently the press had been quickly interviewing and photographing some celebrity just before we sailed. My friend glanced over and smiled. “That’s a rare bird you’ve got on board—that’s Czentovic.” I must have received this news with a rather blank look, for he went on to explain, “Mirko Czentovic, the world chess champion. He’s crisscrossed America from coast to coast playing tournaments and is now off to Argentina for fresh triumphs.”

In fact I now recalled this young world champion and even some details of his meteoric career; my friend, a more assiduous reader of newspapers than I, was able to add a number of anecdotes. About a year previously Czentovic had overnight entered the ranks of the greatest masters of the art of chess, such as Alekhine, Capablanca, Tartakower, Lasker, and Bogoljubov. Not since the appearance of the seven-year-old prodigy Reshevsky at the New York chess tournament of 1922 had the penetration of a complete unknown into that circle of luminaries caused such a wide sensation. For Czentovic’s intellectual traits certainly did not seem to promise a dazzling career. It soon emerged that, chess champion or not, in private Czentovic was unable to write a correctly spelled sentence in any language, and, as one of his irritated peers gibed, “his ignorance was just as absolute in every other area.”

The story can be downloaded as a pdf at:

              http://originalbook.ru/chess-story-s...stefan-tsvejg/

Supposedly, Magnus Carlsen is playing from a ship on the Mediterranean but will be back on dry land in the next few days.
              ________

Yesterday, Kasim told the story of Kramnik's out-of-the-box solution to a tactical exercise he showed him at the players' meeting of the 2018 Candidates in Berlin!

I once showed a tactical exercise to a bunch of players at the Players' Meeting in Berlin because there was nothing to do there. Grischuk and Mamedyarov started solving it. It was difficult so they got really involved. Then, Kramnik looked at the position and he saw that White has an opportunity to go into an equal ending. And he said, "I will play the ending, and I will beat you."

Twitter Comments on the First Two Games

Mr. Dodgy - serious boss move from Gelfand to play from his trophy room

i also only stream with my trophy room in view when i play online

                  - But there are benefits to playing fast... Giri went astray in a complicated position and it's Nepo who takes the lead!

"This game is a legend in itself!" (Kasim)
A stunning game of brilliancies by both sides ends with Kramnik striking the last blow to take the lead!

Kasimdzhanov on the stunning Anand 0-1 Kramnik:
"Did we just really witness this live? ... If you don't get excited about this game, chess is really not the game!"

                  - Still nothing is working for Ding Liren - he could have picked up his 1st win here with 31.Rxd6! Qxd6 32.Bxe6! and there's nothing Ivanchuk could have done about Qc7! next, hitting both rooks

                  - Magnus seems all at sea today - although he's not anymore - as he's a pawn down again out of the opening against Leko!

Jan: "Is Leko outplaying the World Champion in back-to-back games?"

Kasim: "Outplaying the World Champion is just 10% of the job..."

                  - Kramnik powers to a 2:0 lead over Anand, with Vishy now needing to win the next two games on demand to force Armageddon!

                  - Ouch! Another huge turnaround in Nepo-Giri as after 24...Qa5? 25.Ng5! Black is suddenly lost and Nepo also takes a 2:0 lead despite having been in a losing position in both games!

                  - It's going from bad to worse for Ding Liren, but seeing Vasyl Ivanchuk back beating the world no. 3 is still something!

                  - The best thing about this event is that Chuky is playing like it's the 90s

Tarjei J. Svensen - This must be the most dramatic day in #ChessLegends so far. Incredibly exciting games, and it's not over!

Tweets on the Final Two Games

                    - After 3 draws where he lost the opening battle, Magnus is ready to take drastic measures!

                    Jan: "Have you seen Frozen?"
Grischuk: "Yes, I hated it. My daughter was singing the song for a year..."

Grischuk on 50+ Ivanchuk and Gelfand winning matches against 20-year-olds: "I'm getting the impression we are the weakest chess generation!"

                    "Bravo! The brilliancy prize!" (Grischuk)
51-year-old Vasyl Ivanchuk catches Ding Liren with a mating attack to win their match!

                    - After being on the ropes for 3 games in a row, Magnus Carlsen comes through with a win against Leko in the 4th to stay on a perfect 9/9 with Peter Svidler!

                    Who's the biggest #ChessLegends troll?

Grischuk: "Publicly... maybe Kramnik, because he really managed to convince everyone that he's always winning.
Not publicly, I think Vishy, by far. He just doesn't show it publicly, but under the carpet he's a huge troll!"

Grischuk said of Leko's 22...Re6?: "Looks bad, but it's much worse than it looks!"
Afterwards Leko revealed he meant to play 22...Qd7 but played the rook move by a mouseslip!

Magnus on whether there was some reason for how he struggled today: "It was just a very, very tough match – obviously travelling on the day you’re playing is not ideal either, but it was just a very, very tough match"

Magnus Carlsen: "I think in the first two games I was considerably worse but never lost, but in the 3rd game I was just technically lost”

Magnus Carlsen and Peter Svidler lead the chess24 Legends of Chess with a perfect 9/9 after three rounds, while Ding Liren and Vishy Anand are still waiting to get off the mark!

                          Legends of Chess 2020

                          July 24, 2020

                          Preliminaries

                          Round Four

One observation from the Legends Tournament is how Peter Leko has kept up his strength although he rarely plays now. There is an article on him in chess24 today. A couple of excerpts:

                          https://chess24.com/en/read/news/peter-leko-one-draw-from-the-title

At 40 years old, Peter Leko is the youngest of the legends in the chess24 Legends of Chess, but the Hungarian began his chess career early and rose fast. At 14 he set a new record as the youngest grandmaster in history, and by the age of 20 he’d reached the Top 10, where he would stay for a decade. The defining moment of his career came in 2004 at the age of 25, when he was within one draw of claiming the World Championship. Instead Vladimir Kramnik won, tied the match 7:7 and held onto his title.

Peter Leko grew up in Szeged, Hungary, where his father taught him the moves at the age of 7. The youngster took to the game fast and recently credited none other than 8th World Champion Mikhail Tal for fuelling his enthusiasm for chess still further.

He was at the Interzonal in Subotica in 1987 and went with his father to the tournament to get an autograph from Mikhail Tal. They had trouble parking and when Peter went in, the games had started and he was stopped from approaching the players. Tal saw him out of the corner of his eye, didn't play his move, but went down and signed his autograph for the seven-year-old.

Peter tied his match with Kramnik in 2004 and the champion retained his title. Leko was not quite the same after that.

Peter gained an often unfair reputation for making too many draws, and when draws began to be interspersed mainly with losses a crisis arose. He dropped out of the Top 10 in 2010, and finishing last in that year’s Dortmund encouraged him to take a long break from chess, even if his taking a break from chess is easier said than done.

Though he came back in style with a 2800 performance in the World Team Championship in 2011, Peter has never since returned to the very top level.

Instead, while semi-retired as a player, he’s taken on other challenges such as coaching German prodigy Vincent Keymer (who is currently 15 and leading in Biel) and, to the delight of chess fans everywhere, commentating on major tournaments. Peter’s enthusiasm for the game is infectious and he also has a wealth of stories about great players, including how Bobby Fischer stayed at his house for a year and a half in 1998-99.

                              - After 4 rounds of the chess24 Legends of Chess, Magnus is the sole leader and there are no ties on any score! The Top 4 after 9 rounds play a knockout

                              - As Kramnik predicted long before the end, Vishy Anand was just too slow in the Armageddon, but he still picks up a 1st point of the event, while Anish Giri gets 2!

                              - Nepo is now up to 2nd place after mating Ivanchuk in the final game to win their match!

                              - Light at the end of the tunnel for Ding Liren, who after 3 losses comes from behind to take down co-leader Peter Svidler, meaning Magnus now has the sole lead

                              - Grischuk on chess openings:

"To analyse is easy - the difficult part is to remember"

"It used to be like memorising a poem, because it would be some moves you found yourself, then when computers just appeared it would be like memorising a poem in not your native language & nowadays it's like memorising random numbers - it's impossible"

Kazim - "Karsten Muller is author of a book of very complicated rook endings. I used to torture Fabi with them, then one day the book disappeared. I think Fabi took it and burned it. So if Karsten is listening, perhaps he'd send me another copy".

Carlsen on Kramnik-Leko Game 3: "Looks like a faultless game so far to me (laughs). The one thing you can be sure with Vlad is that the most exciting game is almost invariably going to be his!"

                              Jan: "What's Kramnik doing?"
Grischuk: "Kramnik is doing Kramnik things"

                              - An exciting game (No. 2 today) is spoilt as Boris Gelfand simply blunders a crucial central pawn (19. Qf3) and resigns immediately - Magnus Carlsen has a 2:0 lead and needs just a draw in either of the next two games to clinch the match.
