  • COVAID-19 Rating Bonus

I'd like to congratulate the first seven players to earn the 200 point COVAID-19 bonus:
    Anni Guo, Markham ON
    Kaitlyn Tao, Windsor ON
    Drake Chen, BC
    Aiden Li, Kitchener, ON
    Edward Enns, Vanvouver, BC
    Li Geng, Victoria, BC
    Philip Harris, Vancouver, BC

Aiden Li actually earned the bonus twice and he has now reached the 1200 level.

The COVAID-19 bonus was introduced as a temporary measure to encourage participation in CFC Quick rated
online events with time controls of at least 25 minutes per player including increments.
To earn the bonus, a player must play a minimum of 10 games and achieve a Quick rating that is 200 points higher
than their Regular rating. At that point their Regular rating is boosted by 200 points. The bonus can only be earned once
for players above 1200 and twice for players below 1200.
Only players with a Regular rating below 2000 are eligible.

I need to make a small clarification regarding the rating boundaries for eligibility:

Those who have initial regular ratings less than 1000, are eligible for a second bonus of up to 200 points.
But for the second bonus, the maximum new regular rating is 1200.

Those who have initial regular ratings greater than 1000 are
eligible for one 200 point bonus with the maximum new regular rating being 2000.

Sorry, what?? Rating points should not be given as a reward just for playing.

Ratings should exist solely to facilitate accurate pairings.

I'm considering making a report to the ratings auditor to audit why fake rating points being given out.

          oh wait

They are basically bonus points that reward good results. There is an assumption that a player gaining a lot of rating points playing Rapid chess is getting stronger but cannot keep their
Regular rating up to their Quick rating because there are no regular rated tournaments.
Most of the recipients are juniors which seems logical.

Sorry, I should have read this more closely. I might quibble with the details but I agree the rating adjustment based on extra information is likely to lead to more accurate ratings.

Nice to see more people cross the line!

Paul, now that we are 6 months in, is it a good time to reset adults' quick ratings again? Will help more cross the line if they are playing fairly rated adults rather than other underrated players.
