  • Important format change for the FIDE World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad

The FIDE Council approved the following important change in the Regulations for the FIDE World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad.

"Each team shall comprise 4 players and *2 reserves* (one of whom must be a girl) and 1 captain (or Manager, Trainer). Minimum one girl *shall play in all the rounds*."

As a reminder, the next WYCO is scheduled to be held in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan in Q4 2021.

Vadim, perhaps you could clarify what that change means? Is there a minimum of ONE girl among the 4 players and 2 reserves - OR is it that one of the reserves must be a girl?
In any case, if the "girl" has to play in all the rounds, may as well designate her as a player since she MUST play in all the rounds...

This seems like a dog's breakfast to me.

You are right, Kerry, it could have been formulated much better. Unfortunately, there is such thing as "FIDE English" :), to use Alex H.'s term. When a certain article of the Regulations is updated, it is rare for it to be rewritten from scratch; in most cases, new parameters are inserted in the same sentence structure.

In the WYCO case, this is what we had previously (not too grammatical):
"Each team shall comprise 4 players and 1 reserve (one of whom must be a girl) and 1 captain (or Manager, Trainer). The girl shall play at least 1/3 of the rounds (f.e. in 9 rounds at least 3)."

Hence, the progressive change is that *every team shall field at least one girl in every round*, and there is still no fixed "girl's board", which provides some flexibility to a captain. As in any team event, the initial designation of "reserves" affects only the board order that can be specified by a captain in any subsequent round.

An addition of the second reserve player is intended to expand teams a bit, giving chance to more youngsters to travel and to mingle with their peers from all over the world. (The WYCO is the only FIDE event where the organizers *provide free accommodation and meals to all participants*; staging the WYCO is a huge money loss for every organizer.)

My pleasure, we all need a good-natured laugh these days.

One of the traits of this "dialect" is to ignore noun chains completely, using instead repeated "of" prepositions to construct genitive.
