General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!

Thanks, I was unaware of this. I see you have an investment show as well on it; I'll take a listen to it as I'm always on the lookout for tidbits of useful information.
I enjoyed last week's show. Can you give a link to Maria's paintings?
An interesting show might have guests Hal Bond, Aris and Victor Plotkin sharing stories of their international experiences. And could have a series with local guests on chess in the Maritimes, or Manitoba, Alberta, B.C. And of course a show with Nava on her career.
Thank you, Erik! I'll ask Mihail about it, They publish a lot of new paintings on FB as well!
It would be great to have them on the show. However Victor Plotkin has declined my invitation at least 3 times... Aris has declined my invitation during recent election - I wanted to have all three candidates to have public debates... and he has family health issues, but again, he is welcome. Hal is involved into the controversy with his resignation etc. so it is unclear whether it is a good time for him to have a public appearance...however again, all three are welcome. If you'd like to contact them please do so and let me know.
In the future we'll have guests from different provinces. Maybe we'll start with Quebec.
I think this was a nice program, even though I have missed most of it. I agree with Vlad that text based meetings are not very effective. New technology should be taken advantage of. I regret not seeing Spraggett, but I was surprised he agreed in the first place. GM Marin did not seem to talk very much.
I have only watched 20 minutes or so, but I really liked the part where Sasha complained again about the FIDE rep election. He complained that someone got into the race, another dropped out and then endorsed the new candidate. He called it dirty politics. Classic. Wasn't that exactly what Vadim wanted the 2 other candidates to do for him? I guess it is always difficult to look critically at people on one's own "team".
I hope to watch other broadcasts in the future. Thanks for doing it.

We are going to be trying the free version of Zoom for an executive meeting probably next weekend. We might try Zoom at the next quarterly voting member meeting in April or May and thus be able to follow Roberts Rules of Order. It will be a very different process than a text based meeting. Also it will be a lot shorter. To spend more than a month, out of the year in meetings is a form of insanity.

Thank you, Brian! Sorry Spraggett didn't show up, will ask him why...
I've been notified about upcoming FIDE rep election and didn't plan to participate in it. However very soon I've got an email from Vadim Tsypin (whom I've never even met unlike Victor Plotkin and Aris Marghetis). He's asked me to support him in the upcoming election. I've looked at his program, and together with his resume, it all looked solid to me. Although the other two candidates haven's approached me I've decided that it would be fair if all three candidates would have a chance for the public appearance on my IBM TV's chess show, and I've asked all of them to participate on February 20th show, right before the voting would start. Vadim Tsypin agreed, thanking me, Victor Plotkin had a condition that all three would had to participate, and in any case he's confirmed that he will not debate with Tsypin one on one. Aris was hard to get, he had some family health issues, and in any case I've never got his agreement, and that automatically eliminated Victor. So on February 20th there was a show with Vadim only, the other participants on the show were GM Mihail Marin with his wife Maria and Professor Kenneth Regan from the anti cheating FIDE's commission. Vadim performed very well, reiterating his program and was warmly embraced by Prof. Regan. So my mind was clear that on the merits Vadim was a preferable candidate, based on his unmatched experience, credentials, connections, etc. However Aris has resigned while endorsing Victor, and the rest is history. Anyone can read the meetings' minutes.
So far I've described what's transpired from my point of view a week before the CFC FIDE rep election.
But there is much, much more to it, what I've learned and understood only during election...
I will reserve my comments about this election for the time being.
Sasha Starr, VM.
