    Magnus Carlsen Invitational Prelims 2021

    March 12, 2021

Magnus Carlsen Invitational Prelims is a single round robin tournament held on 13th to 15th March 2021.

Magnus Carlsen takes on Tata Steel Masters winner Jorden van Foreest, rapid no. 2 Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Iranian prodigy Alireza Firouzja and his arch-rival Anish Giri one after the other as the Magnus Carlsen Invitational starts Saturday at 17:00 CET. The full pairings are now out and include a first-round clash between Levon Aronian, not yet officially representing the USA, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who is making his Meltwater Champions Chess Tour debut.

The Meltwater Champions Chess Tour is the successor to the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour. It consists of 10 events taking place over 10 months, with the prize fund rising from $1 million to $1.5 million. Six Regular tournaments, three Majors and the Finals are taking place from November 2020 until September 2021.

Originally, each Major was supposed to include a 12-player lineup in contrast to the 16-player field seen in the regular tournaments. However, the fourth event of the tour, a Major, will have 16 players fighting in the preliminaries, since the organizers consider that the larger lineup makes for a more entertaining preliminary round robin — 8 out of the 16 participants move on to the knockout stage.

The preliminary stage is an all-play-all tournament, with five rounds played per day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

In the knockout stage, each encounter will be decided over two days. On day 1, there will be four rapid games, and if the match ends 2:2 it will simply be a draw (there doesn’t have to be a winner). On day 2, another 4-game match will be held. If both matches are drawn, or the players have traded wins, then shortly after the second match there will be a playoff: two blitz games followed, if needed, by Armageddon.

Rd 1 Dubov - Grandelius nice positional game.
Aronian - Shak - after Shak plays one of my favorite openings super tactics and attack on both kings happen and the ending is bloody.

I rather enjoy Peter Leko and Tania Sachdev commenting on the games. They get along well with each other. There are thirteen simultaneous broadcasts of this tourney on chess24.

Rd4 Shak played a wonderful game against Van Foreest with zugzwang at the end. Giri showed fine skill with subtle moves with the bishop over knight in the endgame against Magnus.

Rd 5 MVL caught Shak and Giri is on a hot pace after taking off Wesley So. What a swindle by Firoujza or did Grandelius swindle himself? Im enjoying the games.

I just went back and caught up with Rd 3 action and good thing I did. Aronian played a beautiful game against Karjakhin sacrificing the exchange for positional pressure.

Hey Hans, in round 2 Shak was winning against Dubov and after move 67. Rc7 + appeard to be winning a bishop. However, just like at the chesspark there was a nasty but funny suprise.

Rd6 Wesley So plays like Tal vs Aronian! Im so impressed! Ne4 (which the computer labels as red) how could you not play that move? - and then the witty exchange after Re6. Prime entertainment!
