    Recent Firouzja Games

    April 3, 2021

While the rest of us are worried about covid-19, the young masters are playing full steam ahead. I give here two recent blitz tournaments with all the games of Firouzja. In the first set, I just have the noms from chess.com. With work, I suppose one could dig out the actual names.

    March 30 Titled Tuesday

GM Alireza Firouzja (@Firouzja2003) won the Chess.com Titled Tuesday tournament on March 30 with an undefeated 10/11 score. It was his second Titled Tuesday victory, after having won on June 23, 2020.

This week's Titled Tuesday tournament had a total of 740 participants. As always, it was an 11-round Swiss with a 3+1 time control.

This time, Firouzja managed to remain undefeated throughout the tournament. He started with seven wins, then drew twice, with GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Aleksei Pridorozhni (@Alexsur1981), and next finished with two more wins.

won $750 for first place, Pridorozhni $400 for second, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (@ChessWarrior7197) $150, and GM Sergei Zhigalko (@Zhigalko_Sergei) $100.

    Recent Firouzja Games

    April 3, 2021

    (continued)

    March 23 Titled Tuesday

GM Pavel Anisimov (@PaulfromSPb) won the Chess.com Titled Tuesday tournament on March 23. The grandmaster from St. Petersburg (as his handle points out!) finished half a point ahead of GM Hikaru Nakamura (@Hikaru) and Dmitry Andreikin (@FairChess_on_YouTube).

This week's Titled Tuesday tournament, the first after the official end of the winter, had a total of 659 participants. The 11-round Swiss, with a 3+1 time control, was kind of a "Russian spring" as seven out of the top-10 were Russian grandmasters.

It's tempting to describe Anisimov's tournament as the perfect Swiss gambit. He lost his very first game on time and in a lost position to a young candidate master but then finished with an astonishing 10/10.

It took a while before he faced big names, but it is still impressive that he also managed to win his last three rounds against GM Sanan Sjugirov (@Sanan_Sjugirov), GM Alireza Firouzja (@Firouzja2003), and his famous co-resident of St. Petersburg, Peter Svidler (@PSvidler).

Alireza stood 20th with 8 points.

Rd 4 Firoujza - Tigr. What a high quality game, especially at that time control! Amazing! Also round 10 Naroditsky - Firoujza great entertainment.
By the way the diagram should be moved down a rank, otherwise it doesnt make sense.

        April 6 Titled Tuesday

        See Peter Doggers -

He hadn't won a Titled Tuesday since June 23, 2020, but after winning last week, this week GM Alireza Firouzja (@Firouzja2003) came in first twice in a row. The victory, again achieved with a 10/11 score, was a nice warm-up for his match with GM Vladislav Artemiev in the bullet championship that Firouzja would win as well.

This week's Titled Tuesday tournament, held on April 6, had a total of 800 participants. As always, it was an 11-round Swiss with a 3+1 time control.

Like last week, Firouzja managed to remain undefeated throughout the tournament. After five wins, he drew with GM @Oleksandr_Bortnyk and joined a big group of players on 5.5/6. GM Jeffery Xiong (@jefferyx) and GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac (@BogdanDeac) were still ahead of the pack with 6/6.

An exciting game was Firouzja's clash with GM Baadur Jobava (@exoticprincess), who played a promising sacrifice on the kingside but then didn't find the right follow-up.

After nine rounds, Firouzja was in a tie for first place with GM Hikaru Nakamura as both had scored 8.5/9. Obviously, they got paired against each other. It was Firouzja who had winning chances for a while:

While Nakamura was held to a draw in the final round by GM Federico Perez Ponsa (@Genghis_K), Firouzja as Black Firouzja as Black became the only player to reach 10 points as he defeated GM Peter Svidler.

Firouzja won $750 for first place, Nakamura $400 for second, GM Srinath Narayanan (@GMSrinath) $150 for third, and GM Kirill Shevchenko (@kirillshevchenko) $100 for fourth.

Firouzja Wins 2021 Bullet Chess Championship Presented By SIG‎

          PeterDoggers

GM Alireza Firouzja has won the 2021 Bullet Chess Championship presented by SIG. The Iranian super-GM first eliminated top favorite GM Hikaru Nakamura in the semifinals and then was too strong for GM Andrew Tang in the final.

The Bullet Chess Championship presented by SIG was held April 5-7 on Chess.com with the very best bullet players on the planet. Only World Champion Magnus Carlsen was missing from an otherwise star-studded field. Firouzja earned $10,000 for his first place.

          Naroditsky-Tang 7.5 - 9.5

          Firouzja-Nakamura 10 -8

The much-anticipated match between Firouzja and Nakamura started next. It was a repeat of the final of the Bullet Open Championship from the end of 2020 and also of the 2019 quarterfinal when both times Nakamura emerged victoriously. The American GM was definitely the slight favorite again, also because he had just beaten GM Arjun Erigaisi 13-3 the other day.

Nakamura had an excellent start and was about to go 3-0 when he blundered a piece and it was 2-1 instead. He still reached 4-1 anyway, winning game five in the nick of time.

With Nakamura leading 6-3 at halftime, few would have predicted Firouzja to win this match. However, the second half saw a completely different picture with the Iranian prodigy winning that second "set," also nine games, 7-2 to take match 10-8.

"[During the break] I thought I had to play more relaxed and play more like I'm playing every day against Naroditsky or like this," Firouzja explained his comeback. "That way I could have a chance, at least."

The end was an absolute nail-biter, with Nakamura winning a must-win game to make 8-9 with 21 seconds left on the match clock. Having double the amount of time (22 seconds vs. 11 for Firouzja) he seemed on his way to flag his opponent, make 9-9 and force a playoff. He also could have won a piece there but instead blundered his own rook.

"It was a bit of luck I guess, but overall I think I played good chess against Hikaru," Firouzja would later say. "The first games were a bit shaky, but after that it was pretty decent."

          Firouzja - Tang 11 - 5

The 2021 Bullet Chess Championship was presented by Susquehanna International Group, LLP (SIG). SIG is a global quantitative trading firm founded with a growth mindset and an analytical approach to decision-making. As one of the largest proprietary trading firms in the world

In the Xiong Firoujza game incredible knight play, I loved it.
Also in Firoujza - Nakamura early bishop exchanges so lots of knight maneuvering. Very enjoyable.

After no chess postings for a while we have a lot of new games (thanks to Wayne) and I have to catch up but I'm loving it. I'm even looking at the bullet games (which I never thought I would do). Firoujza would seem to be spanked by Nakamura in the first half, including a miniature and after losing 4 out of 5 he bounced back and won the next two before losing two more. Then he won the next half with an overwhelming score to win the match! Brilliant! He's building, endurance, fortitude, and stamina at an amazing rate and i think this is a milestone beating Nakamura at his forte. Ive checked the first half games and they are of surprising good quality for bullet chess. I need to play over the last half games.

I admire Naka and Firoujza's ability to play bullet chess. The quality is actually pretty good considering. and especially Firoujza has the ability to finish with nice endgames (usually) at that speed.
