The Continental has 8 spots (I guess two years worth of players) and is being run as 8 separate 16 player Hybrid KO events. Best of two matches with I think a two game tie-break and then Armageddon (correct me if I'm wrong, Victor).

Some groups have only 14 players...

Because the total is less than 128, so some higher-rated players have a bye in 1st round. Actually, the similar situation in European qualifier, top players need to win just 2 matches to qualify. No doubt, European one is so much stronger.

I would like to shout out a big salute to the Arbiters who have stepped up this weekend for this Hybrid format! Without you, our players couldn't have kept striving through their play to advance!

What's happening with V.Plotkin-Bellissimo? Chessbomb shows two Plotkin wins by default. Did they play in person?

Not much coverage here of this event, but all of the games are on Chessbomb. GM Bator Sambuev won today to win his mini-match 1.5-0.5 and goes on to Round 3 where he plays, I think, GM Yusnel Bacallao Alonso from Cuba (2590).

Bator in the only Canadian who survived 2nd round. Other 3 Canadians (Mark Plotkin, Victor Plotkin and Max Gedajlovic) lost to higher rated GMs with the same score 0.5 - 1.5.

Lots of eval swings starting around move 20 or so (I could hardly guess any of the moves but they were all better than mine) , but seeing 28....Nxe3 played against you has to feel like a hard punch in the gut. Bator pounced when the opportunity presented itself. One more to go tomorrow!
