Some draws are worth looking at. Complex tactics in Gareev-Jakovenko. I liked Timur's long term evaluation with bishop, rook and two pawns for two rooks (also more pawns on the board) but the computer thinks just equal. Still amazing tactics.

Apparently Levon Aronian has come down with covid. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.

MVL strikes first in a miniature against Moradiabadi in rd 2 game 2. Its one of my favorite opening sidelines in the Sicilian (3.g3) and I love MVL's Na3,Nb5,Nc3,Nd5 followed by the knockout Nf6+

FIDE World Cup Open Sochi 2021

            July 16, 2021

            Round Two

            Game Two

            From the official site:

            https://worldcup.fide.com/news/tpost...sen-debuts-wit

Minutes before first game yesterday, Carlsen received the 2020 Fair Play Svetozar Gligoric award, in recognition to an individual who, during the previous year, displayed exemplary behaviour that promotes the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship in chess.

In the semi-finals of the 2020 online “Chessable Masters”, Magnus won a key game by the unfortunate disconnection of his opponent, Ding Liren. Carlsen demonstrated that "winning fair" was far more important to him than winning at any cost, therefore minutes later in the second game he gave up his queen and resigned after just four moves to restore parity in the match.

Introduced by Laurent Freyd (Principal Tournament Arbiter), FIDE Vice-President and Chairman of the Award Commission, Mr. Mahir Mammedov, congratulated Magnus on his achievement and spoke a few words of encouragement to all the players in the hall.

Ouch! Magnus will still be going through to Round 3, but after working some magic to get a winning endgame he's blitzed out a blunder and it's objectively drawn again

Magnus Carlsen gets there in the end and wins 2:0 to set up a Round 3 clash against Norwegian no. 2 Aryan Tari!

Thats an awesome game Sam Shankland played against Jobava leading up to the breakthru 38.Nxe6 and the position crumbles.

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...Georgiev_Kiril This game is full of desperation tactics. When more and more tactics are played it forces intense calculation and precise valuation of resulting positions. Wily veteran Kiril Georgiev handles the tactics very well and came thru against young talent Maghsoodloo.

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...rov_Shakhriyar The Shak strikes! A superficial evaluation of the position after the black strong knight is exchanged on e4 might lead you to think material equal, position equal but no! The difference is a weakness on whites kingside. Black eventually gets in on the f3 square. Nice technique and nicely done!

Shirov-Zherebukh match high entertainment! In rd2 game 3 Shirov tries to get at the king, avoids repetition, and then cant get at the naked king. In game 4 the computer repeatedly screams that Shirov play Ne5 and then finally his opponent forces him to play it.
