Its rd 1 of a great tradition and already the fireworks have begun! https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022...rov_Shakhriyar Look at the picture after move 13!! Black has just played BB5 - and why not !? But Dubov as we know is fearless. Has he bitten off too much?? - or could (no really?) this all be home prep? Fascinating!

    Eyes glued to the screen.

Dubov had an amazing tactical adventure and got away with it. What complications!

Rd1 Esipenko - Magnus just as fascinating but because of questions.https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022...Carlsen_Magnus After move 15 with the famous hanging pawns for Black, Esipenko plays Na4 and the computer says ...d4 with advantage to Black. So here Magnus plays Rc7 to invite Bc3. To be clear: 16.Na4 Rc7 17.Bc3 Now here the computer gives 17...d4 with a +2 advantage for Black and thats after Ba5 winning the exchange. Really!?!? My sense says kingside weaknesses but I cant figure it out. Wonder what further study will say.

Duda - nice finish against Rapport.

Caruana played a nice game but missed his opportunity against Karjakhin.

Grandelius got over eager in a treacherous position and lost against Van Foreest.

Sam Shankland is suffering against Vidit.

Rd 2 Looks like Magnus is going for checkmate.(Nxf7)

No checkmate but forced weaknesses leading to a winning endgame two pawns up.

Rd 3. Grandelius was grabbing pawns while his king position looked scary https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022...apport_Richard 29...Rh1 is a nice tactical solution.

Dubov collapsed against Vidit and as a result Vidit is in clear first! 5 way tie for second, Magnus, Duda, Esipenko, Rapport and Van Foreest.

Rd 4 Funky moves in Magnus game. 25.Qg2 fianchettoing the queen.

Magnus is thinking endgame but Black has other plans.
Now thats a fighting draw and great entertainment.

Rd 4 https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022..._Jan_Krzysztof Brilliant game by the Shak and it puts him back in the hunt.

Praggnanandhaa went from playing a horrid game in rd 3 to a great game in rd 4.

Vidit remains all alone in the lead.

Rd5 Interesting matchups today producing good fighting games.

The Shak strikes! - and is now tied with Vidit for the lead.

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022...aggnanandhaa_R Rapport won a nice strategic game and is now tied for first.

Caruana let another advantage slip. He's having trouble conveting in this tournament.

Sam Shankland is a good defender (and likes the two knights - thats why I like him) and has held back the superstars like Caruana and Rapport. In todays game he neutralized Dubov.

Rd 6 Magnus beats Rapport and is now tied for first with Shak and Vidit.

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022...ano-Giri_Anish Caruana seemed to get confused in the middle of a long combination (31.Bxc8) and the position turned on him.

Rd 7 https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022...aruana_Fabiano Caruana plays picturesque chess! Look at the knight on c3! (move 37 and onwards)
                          Magnus beats Praggnanandhaa.

Van Foreest upsets Vidit with a lovely pair of bishops!

Rd 8 Giri has a lovely endgame to play: 3 connected passed pawns vs knight on the kingside (as well as two pairs of rooks and 3 on 3 on the queenside)
                              https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022...rey-Giri_Anish

In Caruana - Van Foreest Black had a healthy advantage but a draw was decided.

Sam Shankland has managed to contain Magnus so far.

In the Shak - Pragg Black lashed out with his pawns first but White artfully made the pawns bad and now controls the center and has active piece play.

Vidit's bishops were raking at the end - a triumph of strategy over a strategical player (Grandelius)
