  • 2022 Canadian Chess Hall of Fame Nominations

The Canadian Chess Hall of Fame Committee (Larry Bevand, Hugh Brodie, Ian Findlay, Fred McKim and Stephen Wright) is actively preparing to receive, review and vote on nominations for the 2022 class of inductees.

Public nominations made to this board or privately by e-mail to one of the committee members will be given consideration. If you would like to add any achievements beyond what is given on David Cohen’s Canadian Chess Biographies Page, please feel free to add them. The deadline for nominations is Sunday, March 6.

Current members of the Hall of Fame can be found at

Our 2021 inductees, Annabelle Lougheed-Freedman, Henri Roy, and Stanley Wilson will be formally recognized this summer and are not yet updated online.

On that same note, as we are unable to update David Cohen’s website, it would be wonderful if anyone out there was interested in designing and hosting the Hall of Fame and Player of the Year web sites. Once the initial site is built there would not be a lot of upkeep going forward.

It seems to me that there are many players worthy of induction. We might begin with anyone who represented Canada at the Chess Olympiad numerous times, persons such as Nickoloff, O'Donnell, Hergott and Baltgailis, to name some of them. Anyone who achieved the title of Grandmaster while playing AS a Canadian should also be seriously considered. I would also suggest Hal Bond for all of his accomplishments, not the least of which was his acting as an Arbiter in a match for the World Championship of Chess!

As I said before, I think Igor Ivanov, surely, and maybe Alexandre Lesiège should be inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame. Igor died in 2005 and I do not understand why he has not been inducted many years ago. Igor is arguably the greatest player we had. What beautiful and combative chess he could play. He's right up there near or ahead of Kevin Spraggett.

I would like to offer some general comments on the Hall of Fame, and several further possible names for consideration.

With the recent passing of IA David Cohen, who founded and managed the Hall, he was dealing with declining health for the past several years. David did magnificent work with it. He was also a skilled and dedicated organizer.

What I believe is that we have currently a backlog of highly deserving individuals, who merit strong consideration, and hopefully eventual induction, for the Hall of Fame.

In addition to those people who have already proposed in posts here, I can think of several more people, who have contributed very strongly on the organizational and sponsoring aspects.
Organizers: Terry Fleming, Doug Burgess, Les Bunning, Maurice Smith, John Schleinich, Martin Jaeger.
            Sponsor: Sid Belzberg.

John and Martin have already left us. But Terry, Doug, Les, and Maurice are getting on in years. If they are to be recognized, it may be appropriate to prioritize their cases, so that if they do get selected, they will be alive to enjoy it.

Sid is without question one of the most generous patrons in the history of Canadian chess. He is still a comparatively young man; in his early 60s, I believe.

            Respectfully submitted,
            Frank Dixon
