  • Prizes Report - 2022 KEC (Kingston Easter Chess)

Hello everyone, regrets, I needed a little break before working on this ... here are the prizes!!

    CANADA ZONAL:
YUANCHEN ZHANG = IM title + next Open Olympiad team + next Open World Cup + $2000
SHAWN RODRIGUE-LEMIEUX = IM title + very likely next Open World Cup + $1500
+ $500 (Bryon Nickoloff Memorial Prize for Top Open Junior)
    BATOR SAMBUEV = $1000
    RAJA PANJWANI = $500
    ZACHARY DUKIC = FM title
    ADAM DORRANCE = CM title

    CANADA WOMEN ZONAL:
MAILI-JADE OUELLET = next Women Olympiad team + next Women World Cup + $1500
+ $500 (Bryon Nickoloff Memorial Prize for Top Women Junior)
SVITLANA DEMCHENKO = likely next Women World Cup + $1000
    YU HAN (VERONICA) GUO = WFM-elect + WIM norm + $500
    MICHELLE HUA = WCM-elect

    U2200 SECTIONAL:
    JOSEPH BENHER SAVIO = $1000
    YOUHE HUANG = $500
    DANIEL XU = $83.33
    IAN LOADMAN = $83.33
    CHU HANG ZHANG = $83.33

    U1900 SECTIONAL:
    RANDIKA BALASOORIYA = $1000
    FERDINAND SUPSUP = $375
    HENRY HUGHES = $375

    U1600 SECTIONAL:
AARON REEVE MENDES = $1000 (also won the Material Odds Blitz on Saturday)
    OLIVER BYL = $500
    BEN BEARDALL = $125
    ELLIOTT TSENG = $125

In addition, Frank Dixon and Hans Jung are figuring out how to spread around $600 in "best games" prizes.
When they're figured out, I'll add them to this thread (I won't wait for them before paying out above prizes)

Thank you, kind regards, Aris Marghetis.

P.S. After five low-sleep nights in a row, I'm bushed, so might not see replies until tomorrow.

Why are monetary prizes split in the other sections, but not in the Zonal? I tied 3-5 with Bator and Raja, we should be splitting those prizes. It's purely monetary, there is nothing else to share like trips to World Cup etc...

I know you said "Generally NO splitting of these prizes", but does anybody see the logic in not sharing monetary prizes in the top section, but not in other sections?

Don't Canadian tournaments always split money prizes? The tie-breaks can determine the final order and who gets the trophy. But in Europe they use tie-breaks for prizes. Maybe it's a FIDE rule for Zonals? If this wasn't a zonal year, the cash would be split 3 ways?

My thanks to Aris, the whole team, and all my opponents. It was a wonderful vacation for me.
Win, draw, or lose, I enjoyed all 9 games and enjoyed all the post mortem's.
It was great to see many more people in person again.
                It was a great event.

                Thanks! :)

                See you next year.

Thanks for the kind words Bob ... you were so much fun as part of the team, helping Alex and I out too!

(thank you also to Dilip for your compliments)

Stay tuned for more reporting (lotsa event paperwork first), but I did want to announce some special thanks:

One of our key goals was ZERO unplayed games, and for the first 8 rounds, we were able to do just that!
Big BIG thanks especially to Halldor Palsson, Hal Bond, and James Mourgelas:
These three men accepted many pairings wherever we needed them in order to avoid any forced byes!
Thanks also to Greg Rusonik, Frank Dixon, and Ted Hsu; they also played one or more filler games.

Top players by rating gains. Players reaching their highest ever. Perhaps gaining rating points is worth more than getting a money prize?!

                      58 2241-2299 Chen, Max 5.5

                      Canada Women Zonal
                      122 1833-1955 Guo, Yu Han (Veronica) 5.5
                      90 1347-1437 Gavrileva, Anna 3.5
