  • 2022 KWCC Spring Quick - Results

71 people participated in this event. I'm pleased since this is a high turnout for a quick tournament in our area. Notably there were 30 people who had not previously played in a CFC rated tournament. This is due, I believe, to a surge of interest in chess over the past couple of years. The pandemic forced people to find new ways of entertaining themselves, and online chess was one of those ways. Now some of those people are adding in-person competition to their chess activities. I hope that their interest continues and leads to high levels of participation in future chess events.

Congratulations to Aaron Lovi, Mate Milinkovic, and Sarthak Deshpande who tied for first place with 4.5/5 in the Swiss Section. Congratulations also to Aiden Li, Andrei Kononenko, Homer Ayuste, and Aditya Singh who tied for 4th with a score of 4/5. The first two were awarded prizes for 'Best Under 1400' and the other two for 'Best Under 1000 or Unrated'.

Joshua Terry turned in an outstanding performance, winning every game in the Round Robin A Section. Tournament favourite Adam Cormier came in second, losing only to Joshua. In the Round Robin B Section, Dennis Shamroni was nearly perfect with a score of 4.5/5. Second went to the lowest rated player in the section, Varun Sudarshan. Congratulations to all.

This is the first time that I set up two round robin sections in a tournament. I got some positive feedback, so I plan on doing similar things in the future.

Thanks to my assistants Ed Thompson, Matt Lewis, Kyle Van Der Welle, and my wife Jaye and my son Spencer for setup, photography, acting as doorpersons, etc. Events like these require several dedicated persons to succeed.

I can only add a +1. He was clearly the class of our section and not someone I'd be looking forward to playing again (at least if I wanted to win). Well done on his part.
