  • 2022 Ontario Open Recap

    Hi everyone,

Annex Chess Club (ACC) is proud to have hosted the Ontario Open in May 2022 for the 4th time. The field was strong and included 28 titled players.

The event was won by IM Nikolay Noritsyn who scored 5 out of 6. It gained international coverage thanks to a 12-page article on American Chess Magazine (June 2022 edition), with annotated games featuring GM Bator Sambuev, WGM Maili-Jade Ouellet, IM Nikolay Noritsyn, IM Ameet Ghasi, IM Shiyam Thavandiran, IM Mark Plotkin and FM Victor Plotkin. ACM will also publish additional games from the event in its next edition.

The full article will be available on our website from tomorrow Tuesday, June 28th. Click here for more info: Annex Chess Club | Toronto | Chess for everyone

ACC also made two recap videos to document the Tournament, which are now uploaded on our YouTube Channel. Follow the links below to watch them:
ACC’s board is grateful to the 8 sponsors and the army of volunteers who helped us run the event and make it a memorable moment.

The Jacques Katz Spirit of Chess Award was presented at the tournament prior to the start of Rd #4 to the following recipients:
    • FM Victor Plotkin – 2020 award (presented to Victor by his son, IM Mark Plotkin)
    • Marcus Wilker – 2021 award (accepted for Marcus by Keith Denning)
    • IM Michael Barron – 2022 award (presented to Michael by Alex Ferreira)
These individuals have all helped to promote and develop chess and the spirit of chess, in meaningful ways, across the GTA.

This award is normally handed out on an annual basis by the management of two organizations—Annex Chess Club and Chess Institute of Canada. The award recognizes the great work done by a recipient in making a meaningful contribution to the advancement of chess in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), while demonstrating the highest and best spirit associated with the game of chess. Previous recipients of the award were Ted Winick (2018) and Alex Ferreira (2019).

Through this award, we honour the life and contributions of Jacques Amir Katz, an Annex Chess Club member who died in 2017. We remember Jacques for his sportsmanship, love of chess, setting a positive example for others to follow, and for promoting and teaching chess to children. We also remember how Jacques enjoyed his time playing chess and interacting with other members of our club, even while he was engaged with his own personal health struggles. Due to the pandemic interfering with normal chess gatherings, the Jacque Katz Spirit of Chess Awards had been deferred but were finally presented at the Tournament.

Impressive! A 12 page article in American Chess Magazine (the best magazine in the world - in my opinion) of a Canadian tournament - that must be a first! A lot of work went into the Ontario Open and the copious links show that! Also noteworthy is the Jacques Katz Spirit of Chess Award and the 5 winners so far - all well known in Canadian chess - Ted Winick, Alex Ferreira, Victor Plotkin, Marcus Wilker, and Michael Barron.

Many thanks Brad, Hans and Aris for your kind words.

I think George Supol did a great job and summarized the tournament very well. I hope you also enjoy the personnel annotations by Nikolay Noritsyn, Mark Plotkin and Maili-Jade Ouellet on their respective games. Many thanks to Michael Humphreys for his work and annotations as well.

Important Note: we were authorized by American Chess Magazine to post it in full on our website.

Great article with colour photos and annotated games (not just stockfish lines), and many diagrams. Anybody know Nathan Hilker? He got a photo and annotated game. And he was rated 1143 (now 1316)!

There is another Canadian game Arthur Guo 1-0 Raja Panjwani, Charlotte.

Elsewhere in the magazine they publish a 1975 rated player's win ove a GM, a nice story of a girl playing her hero, and the latest Stockfish best line in the Fried Liver Attack.

What a great event. I wanted to play as did many other chess players. I think 250-300 would have played if entries had not been closed.
