One health benefit of chess which is often overlooked.
Forcing players to turn off their cell phones during games.

Which one? The Eagles or the Cranberries? Parodies are powerful.

As a retiree, and somewhat aged, I am, I guess, quite a dinosaur. And have less need of a cell.

My phone is always OFF. The exception is when I want to phone, text or e-mail. I do very little google searching on my phone (I use my laptop).

My voice mail warns not to leave a message since it won't be heard. I ask that I be texted or e-mailed to call back.

But I check for texts 4 X per day: When I get up and 9:00 AM; then 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. In an emergency between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, one has to come visit or call someone living close-by to come over. And how many fatal emergencies have you experienced while not being available. At the time of the landline, those out of the house could not receive "emergency" calls. I think this argument is over-rated.

I think the cell phone is great, but it is for me, not the world! I don't think we should have become addicted to them. I don't think employers should be able to call workers at 3:00 AM.

            Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for being informative Bob. My cell phone situation is identical to yours (but I dont consider myself a dinosaur). And I wouldnt dream of playing chess on my cell phone. However I probably spend too much time on my computer - but thats a different story.

Its ok - the powerful parody only lasted a few hours (in my head) I do recall however playing an email game recently where every move was accompanied by a line from a Beatles song, whereas my opponent had a line from an Eagles tune. That reverberated thru my mind for months (fortunately with breaks).

For those of you who simply cannot disconnect, here's a service that will hopefully be offered in Canada, soon!

Where I come from, smoking in the tournament room was banned about twenty years before smoking in the workplace.
