I nominate Les Bunning, of Ottawa, for the Canadian Chess Hall of Fame.

Les has been a major, important contributor to Canadian chess since the 1960s, in many diverse facets.

He was instrumental in setting up the early days of the magazine, the CFC business office on Montreal Rd. in Ottawa (then Vanier), and in establishing a sound legal structure for the federation, using his professional legal experience. This was all during the late 1960s and early 1970s. His legal guidance for the CFC lasted for decades; on a pro bono basis, he saved the CFC many thousands of dollars, had they had to pay for it.

As a player, Les achieved a rating of 2000+, in a tough, very competitive Ottawa chess scene.

He was a significant organizer, with the 1973 Canadian Open in Ottawa being among his finest achievements. He could have been awarded the International Arbiter title at that time, I believe, had an application been made for him to FIDE. As a young player, I played in Ottawa-area events which he organized and directed; they were always well-run and enjoyable.

Les served as a Governor of the CFC for many years, including terms on the Executive, and served as CFC President.

I don't know Les that well, so I am hoping that other Ottawa chess people will supply more details of his contributions, to aid this very deserving nomination.

Les is also a keen golfer of substantial ability. He had me as a guest, paying for everything for my day, at his Club in Ottawa when I was serving on the organizational team for the 2013 CYCC and Canadian Open in Ottawa. I hope to be able to repay that favor someday soon!

    Respectfully submitted,
    Frank Dixon

I think at some point, Fred McKim deserves consideration for his decades of work in the Maritimes and service on the CFC executive.

Thanks for your vote of confidence, Ken. It's probably for the best if Members of the Committee, don't consider each other, though.

Alexandre and Igor will make a great addition to the hall of fame. Igor Ivanov is one of the greatest Canadian player as well as a very colorful individual. He died way too young.

I nominate Hugh Brodie, of Montreal.

                        Hugh's major achievements:
                        1) Hugh started, and continues to maintain and add to, the comprehensive database for games by Canadian players, CANBASE. He has been updating it every three months in recent times. The world's premier site for Canadian chess games. Many games on this site are available nowhere else. In my opinion, Hugh's efforts with this, involving many thousands of volunteer hours, represent one of the all-time important contributions to Canadian chess!!!
                        2) Hugh has been an organizer and CFC Governor for many years.
                        3) As a player, Hugh has attained a rating of 2000+, in a very competitive Montreal chess environment.

                        Respectfully submitted,
                        Frank Dixon

                          1) Thanks also to Luc Gauthier, who has entered more games than I have over the last few years. He is also excellent at translating the bad handwriting of some of our strongest (and not so strong) players.
                          2) I haven't been a Governor for at least ten years, and I haven't organized anything in over twenty years.
                          3) Most of my games have been played outside Montreal.

I nominate FM Bruce Harper, of Vancouver.

Bruce has been a strong player for 50+ years. His major achievements include:
                            1) Primary author of 'Chess On The Edge', a three-volume book collection of games by GM Duncan Suttles, the second Canadian to reach the GM title. This is a magnificent achievement, including nearly 1,000 games, all annotated, which must have taken many years of determined research and analysis. Bruce was assisted by GM Yasser Seirawan; Bruce had been mentored by Duncan. The books were published by Larry Bevand of Chess 'n Math. In my opinion, 'Chess On The Edge' is the most outstanding chess literary effort in Canadian history, so far. It is a world-class accomplishment.
                            2) Attained the FM title as a chess amateur, with many tournament titles to his credit. He has played in the Canadian Zonal, as B.C. champion.
                            3) He has been an organizer, a mentor to young players in B.C., and a CFC Governor.

                            Respectfully submitted,
                            Frank Dixon
