General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The Smithville, Ontario, club had one member - me. But I had to cancel my membership because I didn't like my attitude and I caught myself drinking during a meeting.

It seemed pretty clear to me that Peter's post was "tongue in cheek". Lighten up.
There is enough garbage on CT that occasional funny posts should be more than welcome.

I took Larry’s remark as similarly tongue in cheek in keeping with the tone of peters original response. So, er, lighten up and don’t be so literal?
I believe the Mississauga CC is the largest if one joins adults and juniors (They have a massive junior membership, or did have, and at a very low cost to get them in). I believe Undriadi Benggawan is still President/Manager (I don't think he comes to ChessTalk)? A number of years ago, they displaced Scarborough CC from 1st place.
But since the Pandemic, I believe the SCC numbers have fallen a bit, and the no. of junior members seemed to drop substantially after the Pandemic. But I am just an ordinary member. Perhaps one of the Exec. can give more recent upcoming 2023-4 numbers?
Members: The current paid member count was somewhere above 100 in the last year season. We had 52 in the main tournament, and 47 in U900 of the 2023 championship. Sorry, I don't have a ratio of adult/junior.
Fee: 80 CAD for the whole year; and prorated depending when someone joins. Discount for family members.
Meeting times: once a week. Usually on Mondays. Special cases - Tuesdays after long-weekend Monday. We operate in summer (there are couple meetings still happening Aug 21 and Aug 28 for this season at Aurora Public Library @5-9 pm). The new season will start in Sep 18 (sorry, no complete schedule yet)

I think the Calgary Chess Club has about 250 members. It is open 6 days a week. $40 for adults,$30 for juniors. https://calgarychess.com/
Edmonton Chess Club is probably a bit smaller and has a facebook page but not a website.
Besides the masters and experts with free membership, are the numbers given in previous posts for fee-paying members? What percentage of those fees received covers rent?

Hi Bob, I believe you are correct. I made that claim here some years ago now. Scarborough challenged the claim, but had to settle for being the stronger club. I recall we contemplated a friendly club match of 50-100 boards, MCC and SCC being the only clubs that could hope to field teams of that size. Anyway, we had fun arguing the case.
FYI, Anna Pan of MCC did post a message here giving some vital club stats. But I heard from Undriadi this evening that the owner deleted the post as unpaid advertising.
So, what's up with that! Mississauga doesn't need to advertise, they were simply replying to Larry questions.
I don't see the Smithville club post being deleted. Did they pay?
Perhaps MCC should post on the CFC forum where they can expect a level playing field.

There are no free memberships in Calgary or Edmonton for Masters, but he annual fee is very reasonable and you get access to a fabulous library in Calgary and a good one in Edmonton.

Just saying.
Bob,
I checked with the CT owner. It was rather more than than unpaid advertising.
Perhaps you could get the facts from Anna, before posting.
