Reykjavik is live and happening! As Hugh noted in the Canadians in Iceland thread Keith MacKinnon gets to play the legendary Ivanchuk in round 1. Lucky guy! I hope either there is a spectacular lesson or a spectacular upset! I'm excited.

Ivanchuk - MacKinnon Classic double rooks on C-file and offside black pieces. Tough to defend and black blunders.

Both the Botez sisters won. Alexandra's win was a resourceful defensive effort where her king survived a tight spot and then she used he past F-pawn and pieces to create counterplay.

With 27 GM's (none over 2700) and 29 IMs perfect for seeking norm opportunities.

Rd 2 Aaron will play GM Daniel Howard Fernandez. 2532 with white. Good luck Aaron!

Keith MacKinnon from Vancouver. Got to play Ivanchuk in the first round. A memorable experience.

Great news 9.5 out of 13 for Canadians in rd 1!. That means better opponents mostly in round 2. Good luck to all Canadians pl;aying. And a special shout out to Aaron Mendes against his GM opponent in round 2.

After round 2, the Canadian contingent seems to be doing well with a net average elo gain. Well done to Aaron who drew vs a GM. He will now face the very talented Lithuanian GM Paulius Pultonevicius - an underrated player in my opinion.

Aaron Mendes did miss a win in the endgame in rd 2. Game until that point (move 48) was very well played.

In rd 3 unfortunately Aaron could not hold off White's looming kingside attack. White's bishop sacrifice Bxg6 was the deciding breakthrough.

Rd 6 Ivanchuk gives a lovely strategic lesson all the way through in his game, in the opening through the middlegame and culminating in the endgame.
