Everyone survived the first round of the US Championships, all draws, although Hans Niemann had, to quote chess.com " a window of opportunity" to win against Fabiano Caruana.

In the first round women's there were many fighting games, three wins but all fairly long games. Rose Atwell, a new face, won with Black with a delicious knight fork followed by a nice mate against Anna Zatonskih.

Rd 2 Sam Sevian is the first winner of the championship totally dominating Ray Robson. Wesley So also won against Chris Yoo.

Sam Sevian surprised Ray Robson with the Jobava system of the London. Now thats prep! I admire that resourceful young man. A huge point resulting and psychologically very uplifting!

In the women's the big upset was Pourkashiyan over Tokhirjonova. Carissa Yip has started a winning streak of two games and has the only perfect score in the entire field.

Is he retiring from active OTB chess?

Short answer: No. Nakamura has stated many times now that he and the other top players in the US are professionals and they are not being reimbursed enough. He makes more money from his streaming (and far less stress) than in the two weeks of the US championship. Also at the olympiad if the US got a gold medal they would get $5000 each, otherwise nada. Its all about conditions. You could find an interview at the recent olympiad where Nakamura states his points, there are many. Nakamura will continue to play the candiadates and other select tournaments when he can fit them into his schedule.

Rd 3 The blood letting gets serious. (I must be in a blood thirsty mood today, maybe Im thinking about Thanksgiving dinner). Dominguez missed a nasty tactic against Hans Niemann and thats all it takes at that level. Hans Niemann did good preparatory work in opening the G-fle to the king. The finish was unavoidable checkmate.

Rd 3 Caruana played a very nice endgame to win against Robson.

A wonder Liang had Levon Aronian flat footed for most of the game and finished with an enthralling endgame of four extra pawns for a piece. Aronian almost escaped but Liang was relentless. Almost a hundred moves. The fans must have enjoyed that one.
