An example of chess humour is the Mishra-So game. Wesley willingly took the "bad" bishop and according to the computer had the worse position for some time. Now the "bad" bishop which was on a7 is now on h6 having traversed the board only on the first three ranks. His position is now rated better. However he should not disturb the equailibrium. Wht do I mean by that? He has nine straight draws and for a perfect half score needs that last round draw. Ten straight!

Awonder Liang had an amazing run but only in the dying moves of the last round game did he allow a breakthrough and lost. However just to set the critics straight - it had nothing to do with the opening.

Fabiano Caruana beat Sam Shankland in the last round. Sam played a great counterattacking game but his decision on move 42 to allow his kingside to be opened cost him dearly.

Caruana had a great tournament at plus 4 and was never really in any trouble. He finished at 7 and was a point and a half ahead of the rest of the field.

                    • There was a log jam for second place: 6 players at 5.5. Lenier Dominguez, Awonder Liang, Levon Aronian, Ray Robson, Sam Sevian, Hans Niemann. I assume there were playoffs but I havent seen any evidence of them. When I know. I will post results.

                        • There were no playoffs for second. The order of placing was: Dominguez, Aronian, Niemann, Robson, Sevian, Liang. Six players - more than half the finishing field! tied for second - unheard of? They each received about $25,000 US for their efforts.

                          • Placing in the world rankings of the top seven finishers: Caruana 2nd, Dominguez 12th, Aronian 15th, Niemann 20th, Robson 33rd, Sevian 36th, Liang 43rd. They all gained rating points, except for Dominguez who stayed even.
