  • World Cup in Russia

The World Cup opening ceremonies will be held Thursday at 5 pm in Khanty-Manslysk, Russia. The first and second rounds will be at 3 pm Friday and Saturday. Subtract 10 hours (might be 11 hours) to convert to EST - which gives a starting time of 5 am (maybe 4 am).

Please post info if anyone finds info on live games - the official web site mentions nothing.

For those of you unfamiliar with the location, take a world map and look for Afghanistan. Directly north of it is Kazakhstan. K-M (population: 50,000) is rougly halfway between the Kazak-Russia border and the Arctic Ocean. (61 degrees north - the southern border of NWT/Nunavut is 60 degrees). Sunrise Thursday will be 8:38 am; sunset at 3:39. The days are shortening by 4-5 minutes daily.

Current temperature is -8 degrees C. Weather for the next few days is mostly cloudy with a chance of snow - temperatures ranging from -19 to -4.

Sorry - I was off by a day in my posting. The opening ceremonies will be held Friday, with the first two games being played Saturday and Sunday.

No need to get up for 5 am on Friday.

          Re: World Cup in Russia

The transmission of round 1 games ended with most games barely out of the opening due to "technical difficulties". Kirsan's alien friends are at it again!

The allocation of spaces for various contries seems strange - Egypt has 6 spots out of 128??

          FIDE is a curious beast.

            Svidler-Hebert is semi-live at http://livechess.chessdom.com/site/

Edit: "live broadcast of round 1 is stopped due to technical reasons", says the official site.

Do you complain that Africa has 6 spots and that Junior champions are too young for the Cup?

I have not seen the pairing tree link posted here. Thus:
                  http://www.fide.com/images/stories/n...rings_tree.pdf

Hebert is at a middle right side.

I just checked the World Cup site,(http://www.ugra-chess.ru/eng/main_e.htm) and Peter Svidler has beaten Jean Hebert in rd#1
The site is experiencing technical glitches.

Hebert lost his game as Black against Svidler. It was a French Tarrasch in which Svidler achieved 2 bishops against knight and bishop and forced home the win.
To my untrained eye, it appeared Jean played well right to the end.
