The beat goes on! The last and only woman is out (Polgar) and the last Chinese player. Svidler and Naiditsch are still fighting it out for the honour of playing Shirov. This is starting to get interesting.

The Chinese make a big quack!

Apparently Li amd Wang, the remaining two Chinese players, were forfeited for not being at their boards at the start of the second game in the round three tiebreaks. The story is that they were on a smoke break.

        Smoking is bad for you.

Shirov is another who can handle this tournament. He was the finalist against Kamsky in 2007 if memory serves. Rebounding from the 98 scandal that Gordon mentioned can't have been easy - the match with GK would have practically set him up for life.

He is clearly a player of great resilience. I like his chances against Svidler/Naiditsch.

Setting up your meeting w/ him in Scarberia?.. Shirov's actually a genuinely nice guy.. takes his opponents to dinner, even if he loses... but he , like Mickey Adams... is past prime for harsh OTB play,, his chances are good in this lotto format though ill have to agree with you... have u considered looking at the games, Hal? http://livechess.chessdom.com/site/

If we are talking about the same game, Svidler won in 42 moves.

Naiditsch let Svidler off the hook in the rapidplay, losing a clearly won game in time pressure. Svidler then reeled a quick win with Black in blitz and when Naiditsch resigned the second game it was finally over. Svidler goes through to round four against Shirov.

Yuo can go to chessbomb/dom and chat online w/ other international chessaddicts, for ex. Dave Pinoy from BC has been chirping there in Filipino and english, rooting for SO, butnow that he's out , and the weekend is over (2am start time for extreme Can west), he'll subside. One gregarious russian bear keeps getting banned and coming bak under another name for off-coloured comments that are, nonetheless, informative, if not over the top. Even the moderator cannot contain his lols.Rybka allows us amateurs to chatter scathingly, like your above Naiditsch comment. In that fourth game, w/ one minute left (20 second increment too, though) he missed a perp that wud have put him through. I'm betting on Svids over Shirov tomorrow, he knows how to hang tough! 5am start EDT. Thx for the ritch updates.

                          Re: Khanty Quack

Looks like plenty of overtime for this shift. Those wins with Black proved too much for Shirov and Laznicka. Karjakin is also thru.

The other tiebreaks will be interesting - Wesley So prefers rapid time controls according to his interview. I believe that his opponent Malakhov was one of Carlsen's victims in 2005.

The Cuban killer Fabiano Caruana may be in too deep against Gashimov but who knows. Experience should carry Gelfand. I like Jako over Grischuk.

So's run has finally come to an end but not before the youngster established himself as one of the brightest new stars in the world chess firmament. Congratulations, Wesley!

Fabiano Caruana ( Italy ), another young up and comer, also lost in tie-break to Vugar Gashimov ( Azerbaijan ) : 3.5 - 1.5. He also looks to have a bright future.

But experience is winning out here.
