No Dominguez. No Nakamura. Nakamura is busy with the Canadians.

Eager to see how Liang, Mishra and Woodward will do.

First round women's. Irina Krush vs Alice Lee. Lets not waste anytime and cut to the chase. Go Alice go.

Caruana at move 18 I thought nothing much going on. White has the G-file but surely Black can defend. Nine moves later its all over. WoW!

Aronian a splendid masterpiece. Jaw - dropping even. Reminds me of Spassky's endgame play. Woodwards bishop and knight were so entangled it was embarassing.

Liang looks like he is playing a stellar endgame but can he win it. Mishra is a great defender.

A blunder by Carissa Yip meant she would go on to lose her first game, so the top two rated have lost and the upsets have already started.

Awonder Liang - alas, alack had a much better position but he had to bring his king into the game which he failed to do and the endgame was a draw.

Aronian and Caruana lead after one. In the women's Krush, Pourkashiyan and Sargsyan are tied for the lead.

Rd 2 My knowledge of chess is too limited to understand Caruana- Woodward so I will give you a brief overview. Caruana sacrificed the queen for what looked like compensation but Woodward kept pressure. At the end Caruana forced a draw.

Rd 2 Liang entered a knight vs bishop ending a pawn up at move 43 against Aronian that lasted to move 104. Draw. Thats two pawn up endgames in a row for Awonder both draws,

Meanwhile Mishra is only half way in his game against Sevian but he's pressing.
