  • Canadian women zonal chess championship 2026

Lots of wonderful memories from tournaments in Québec, but I want the voice heard by FQE.

For many young female chess players, once they grow up and get busy with school or other things in life, they often have to step away from chess. When they eventually return to the game, the Women Zonal or Women Close becomes their battleground.

That’s why, when I saw WCM Lily Zhou coming back to play in the Women Closed 2025 in Toronto, it truly felt like a moment of hope - that one day, our own children might also return to the chessboard.

I sincerely hope that FQE will continue to preserve this wonderful tradition, where everyone with a love for the game can participate.

I’d like to thank FQE for their effort in organizing such a major zonal event. However, the allocation of only 10 spots seems very limited. If it’s not possible to increase this number, rather than selecting players based on provincial representation, I would suggest choosing the 10 highest-rated players (CFC or FIDE) who have expressed interest in participating. This approach would help ensure a more competitive and balanced event.

Alternatively, instead of strictly limiting participation to 10 players, FQE could consider setting a minimum rating requirement — for example, 1700+, 1800+, or even 2100+. This would maintain a high level of competition while allowing more qualified players to take part.

Additionally, recent zonal tournaments have provided young Canadian players with valuable opportunities to earn conditional titles such as WCM, WFM, and WIM. Restricting participation too narrowly could significantly reduce these developmental opportunities for our young talents.

You guys discuss a bid which was not approved by board of directors. I expect some changes including Swiss tournament for ladies.
