https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=2617555 Suttles - Elod Macskasy Macskasy was the "father" of B.C. chess. I would be remiss in not including him.

I didn't realize how young Duncan was when I first learned of him, when I started playing rated OTB in 1965.

He's 5 months younger than me! Geezz...

This thread wouldnt be complete without the theme song of Duncan Suttle's signature opening: The Canadian Rat

I was up analyzing late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight. I pushed my pawn to King Knight Three and suddenly it came to me.

I played the Rat, I played the Canadian Rat. The Canadian Rat, it was a kingside smash. I played the Rat, it caught on in a flash. I played the Rat, I played the Canadian Rat.

From the Class C patzers who castle weak To the tournament room, where the masters feast. It seemed everyone was hitting the groove to get a jolt from my new move.

They played the Rat, they played the Canadian Rat. The Canadian Rat, it was a kingside smash. They played the Rat, it caught on in a flash. They played the Rat, they played the Canadian Rat.

The players were having fun. The tourney had just begun. The entrants included Bobo, Fullbrook and his son. The scene was rockin', all diggin' the sounds. Maddog on chains, backed by his baying hounds. The Siamese players were about to arrive with their vocal group "The Pawn Pushers Five".

They played the Rat, they played the Canadian Rat. The Canadian Rat, it was a kingside smash. They played the Rat, it caught on in a flash. They played the Rat, they nplayed the Canadian Rat.

Out of his coffin, Uncle Vik's voice did ring. Seems he was troubled by just one thing. He opened the lid and shook his fist and said "Whatever happened to my Latvian Gambit!"

Its now the Rat, its now the Canadian Rat. The Canadian Rat, and its a kingside smash. Its now the Rat, its caught on in a flash. Its now the Rat, its now the Canadian Rat.

Now everything's cool, Vik's a part of the band. And my Canadian Rat is the hit of the land. For you the player, this Rat was meant too. When you get to my move, tell them Super sent you.

Then you can Rat, then you can Canadian Rat. The Canadian Rat, and do my kingside smash. Then you can Rat, you'll catch on in a flash. Then you can Rat, then you can Canadian Rat.

Among my favorite Suttles games is: Donato Rivera 0-1 Duncan Suttles, U.S. Open, San Juan 1965. This one was featured in the fine book by GM Andrew Soltis: 'Pawn Structure Chess', and analyzed in some depth. Duncan was still in his teens; this was the first U.S. Open held in Puerto Rico.

Duncan generously accepted an invitation to make the ceremonial first move at the 2016 Canadian Senior Championship in Surrey. I had a contest on chess talk with a $50 prize to the person who correctly predicted his move. I think it was Tom O'Donnell who won by predicting 1.g3

Hi Paul, Thanks for that. Was there a booklet published from that event or was there a write-up in Chess Canada?

We do have the wondrous three-volume set 'Chess 'On The Edge', published in 2008, by FM Bruce Harper, GM Yasser Seirawan, and IM Gerard Welling, as a very thorough record for the games of GM / GMC Duncan Suttles. I own the set, and it has provided me with enormous enjoyment!!

Here is a question: I am wondering if Duncan has considered publishing a memoir of his career!? If so, I think this would attract enormous interest around the chess world!!
