  • 2026 Pan Am Intercollegiate Championship

There are a number of Canadian players and Canadian residents playing in the 2026 Pan Am Intercollegiate Championship in Oak Brook, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. The tournament is a six round swiss, 4 player team event. Teams are composed of university students from North America. Players include Awonder Liang, Aryan Tari and 23 other GMs.

The University of Toronto has 2 teams entered in the Open section. The A team is lead by IM Nicholas Vetesse After 2 rounds, the A team has 1.5 team points with Sergey Noritsyn playing on board 2 and winning both of his games. The B team is lead by Nicholai Woltery from England, who is currently studying at U of T.

Other notable Canadians are Shawn Rodriques-Lemieux representing University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley, Yunshan Li representing University of Chicago and Maili-Jade Ouelet who is playing for University of Texas Dallas C team. Shawn has won both of his first two games.

The next games will be interesting as teams start to get matched up against opponents close to their level.

In round 3, University of Toronto A beat University of Maryland by a convincing 3.5 - 0.5. This was impressive as Maryland has IMs on their team. Sergey Noritsyn continued his winning ways and additional full points were added by Nicholas Vettese and Samuel Zhang. U of T's reward for the team victory is they play St Louis University in round 4. St Louis has 3 GMs in their team and are lead by Aryan Chopra who is rated 2626 FIDE.

As Hugh posted above, Shawn drew his 3rd round game and is now 2.5 / 3. Maili-Jade drew in round 3 and faces GM Bryce Tiglon in round 4.

With 25 GMs and 22 IMs in the tournament and 31 countries represented, it is a shame that the event isn't 9 rounds. There would a lot of opportunities for norms.

Round 4 was a mixed bag for the Canadians. While the U of T A team lost 1-3 to a strong St Louis University, Nicholas Vettese drew against a 2626 rated GM and Fengxi Mao drew against a 2499 rated GM. The U of T B team continues to struggle against higher rated opponents, but achieved 3 draws in round 4. The B team plays Brown University B in round 5. I didn't notice before, but there is a Canadian on Brown B. WCM Carina D'Souza is playing on Board 4 for the Brown B team.

Shawn R-L won his 4th round game to improve to 3.5 / 4. Shawn plays against a GM in the next round.

Round 5 was UofT A vs Brown A and UofT B vs Brown B. The games were fairly even with UofT A winning 2.5 - 1.5 and the B teams tieing at 2 - 2. Sergey Noritsyn returned to his winning ways and now has 4 wins in 5 games. Sergey's only loss was to a 2553 rated GM. He has 3 wins over IMs and a WFM. Samuel Zhang was also victorious for the A team and has wins in 5 games.

On other teams, Shawn drew against a 2541 GM, while Maili-Jade and Yunshan Li won their games.

UofT A team beat a University of Texas Dallas team that was composed of 4 GMs in the last round of the tournament. UofT A finished tied for 4th - 5th in a field with many teams filled with GMs. Top board on the team was Nicholas Vettese, who recently passed 2400 for the first time. While taking on the best players on the opposing teams, Nicholas scored 3.5 points in the 6 rounds and gained another 9 rating points. The rest of the team also finished with a score of over 50%, with Sergey Noritsyn winning 4 of his 6 games on board 2 and Fengxi Mao and Samuel Zhang both finishing at 3.5 points.

Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux won his last game to finish with 5 points and gained a few ELO, while helping his team finish in 2nd place and qualify for the Final Four College Chess Championship. Yunshan Li was also victorious in the final round to finish with 3.5 points.

Great performance by UofT team! In 6 rounds, they beat 3 higher-rated teams and drew one. About 100 rating points made the way from USA to Canada.
