Rd 1 has started. All fighting openings except for Caruana vs Nakamura. Caruana led with 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4. I guess he wanted something different.

Wei Yi has played the Tarrasch against Bluebaum. Should be interesting,

Pragga has played a modern version of the Sicilian Grand Prix Attack and has boldly declared his intentions. It will be interesting to see where Giri puts his king.

Sindarov - Esipenko is a Queen's Gambit Declined with Esipenko fully restraining White's central ambitions.

Rd 1 The Bluebaum - Wei Yi ended in a perpetual.

Pragga has won a pawn and is now in the endgame.

Esipenko seems to be having the biggest success so far. He's forced Sindarov into a closed position and is finding ways to put on pressure.

Nakamura seems to have the easier position to play but the computer favors Caruana's position slightly, although White is getting short of time.

Rd 1 Esipenko played good strategy but blundered in the execution. Stunning turnaround! Heartbreaking loss for Esipenko.

Rd 1 Pragga won a nicely played endgame against Giri.

Rd 1. Nakamura from a reasonable position with plenty of time played like a complete idiot to lose. The start of his slide was retreating the black squared bishop away from controlling the key e1 square. He then played the wrong pawn move to make luft for his king. Along the way he missed some resourceful defensive moves. In a nutshell he caused his own defeat.

                Key win for Caruana.

Both Esipenko and Nakamura must be psychologically shattered. Hope they dig down deep and recover.

At the start after round one Caruana, Pragga, and Sindarov are tied for the lead, each with a win.

In the Women's the games were all drawn, though very interesting.
