General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
ClimateGate - A Question for Ed Seedhouse and Paul Beckwith
Have you suffered a traumatic head injury recently? If so, it could provide an explanation of your posts.
If this person chooses to be anonymous about his credentials as a climate scientist, it is quite possible that he fears repercussions of the type that are exposed in the emails that have been leaked or perhaps it is because "climate science" has reached such a state of disrepute that he chooses not to be associated with the "science" anymore.
Vlad, I read the article you linked. Is the following text a blog quote from somebody? Who?
It would be great if "climategate" was evidence that the climate change crisis didn't exist, however it is not. Just a lot more spin, hype, and controversy.
I remain worried about climate change. Please show me the evidence that global warming is not happening. The glaciers are still retreating, Greenland is still melting, the oceans acidity is still rising,............................
Re: ClimateGate - A Question for Ed Seedhouse and Paul Beckwith
It seems to me that the science is uncertain. Lots of arguments, data and theories exist on both sides of this debate. And of course, some scientists are honest, while others produce the results they are paid to produce by certain interested parties.
But it also seems to me that mankind should assume the worst case scenario, that climate change is partly man-made, and that is is serious, just in case it actually is, and that we should react accordingly.
My gut feeling is that the whole thing is a hoax, but we cannot be sure. There was a time when I believed that it was not a hoax, but the sudden mass flip-flop of all leading politicians world-wide is suspicious to me.
Though again, I think we need to assume that it is real just in case it actually is.
Well, since our current system is heading us toward a major disaster, we'll have to find a way won't we? Or suffer the consequences. What will the cost be of that?
What you seem to be implying is "we can't change, because it would cost a lot of money". But not changing will cost us much more actual real wealth.
Scientists are giving us an unpleasant message. People are responding by shooting the messenger as they so often do.
But that doesn't change the facts. If our economic system can't adapt to the coming changes then it will die and a new one will take it's place.
I don't buy into the warming scares. The planet will cleanse itself in the same manner it has through the ages. The planet survived the ages when the volcanic activity was much higher than it is now.
There is a difference between scientists standing on the street corner with signs saying the world will end and standing with signs saying the world will end tomorrow.
I could probably start a global warming institute, get donations, hire some scientists, get some papers written and win a Nobel Prize. Maybe a global cooling institute would be a better idea and target the people who are fed up with the warming scares for the donations.
Getting back to pollution, shipping coal to other nations to burn is as bad as burning it ourselves. If we wouldn't sell it to them then they wouldn't have it to burn.
As I write, I'm watching an announcer on TV talking about fudging of global warming data. BNN in case you're interested.
I don't buy into the warming scares. The planet will cleanse itself in the same manner it has through the ages. The planet survived the ages when the volcanic activity was much higher than it is now.
LOL....duh, yes, the planet will cleanse itself of the human race. Nobody is worried about the planet surviving, it the inhabitants!
Some appear to be arguing our fate is inevitable, and we're only getting what we deserve, extinction. :o But what of the turtles and penguins! They never hurt nobody.
Vlad, I read the article you linked. Is the following text a blog quote from somebody? Who?
I don't know who. Probably someone who doesn't want to lose his funding to the dirty tricks of the practitioners of political climatology.
It would be great if "climategate" was evidence that the climate change crisis didn't exist, however it is not. Just a lot more spin, hype, and controversy.
They have been caught red handed circumventing laws, fabricating evidence, destroying evidence, falsifying reports and suppressing critics by every subterfuge available to them. Every mistake they make seems to come down on the side of being able to present the data (whether the actual data indicates the opposite or not) to fit their preconceived notions of what they want the data to show. All those graphs that have been posted here can now be discarded.
The medieval warm period was a rather benign time in human history from the point of view of agriculture and it was much warmer than today without the natural disasters that the AGW crowd is going on about.
I remain worried about climate change. Please show me the evidence that global warming is not happening. The glaciers are still retreating, Greenland is still melting, the oceans acidity is still rising,............................
You worry too much. There will always be something new to worry about. If its not global cooling, it will be global warming, or peak oil or any number of other crises du jour. Our planet has seen worse and it has seen better. Lets concentrate on reducing the real pollutants that we pump into the air and water and stop worrying about the carbon dioxide bogeyman who is just a fable designed to let the real bogeymen of the tax man and the nanny state to get more of your money.
Re: ClimateGate - A Question for Ed Seedhouse and Paul Beckwith
It is great that many people are trying to educate themselves on how the Earth and climate has worked now and in the past...
However, pulling information from a website, highlighting one sentence, and then purporting this to be evidence of human cause/lack of cause is mind boggling.
Ernest, perhaps you have found a sentence that invalidates the work of many thousands of Ph. D. level scientists who did not read this article? Amazing!
Or perhaps you need to read a little more about causes of climate change in the past. For example, about orbital changes like eccentricity, tilt, and precession that have changed the levels of sun insolation on our planet, giving rise to ice ages and warm spells in the past. Note carefully the different timescales, those changes are in cycles of 100,000 years, 41,000 years, and 23,000 years. Don't you think that warming over the last 150 years is not the same as that from these orbital effects?
Re: ClimateGate - A Question for Ed Seedhouse and Paul Beckwith
Sunspot activity has been extremely low for the last few years, leading to less energy coming from the sun. Effect is considered to be small as compared to Greenhouse gas effect, unless sun activity stays low for many more years...
"Through the ages" the planet has not had billions of humans with big bulldozers tearing up forests, pulling 90% of all large fish out of the ocean, pumping billions of tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere changing the entire chemistry of the ocean, etc. etc.
The planet has also had 5 large extinctions of life, the largest being the Permian 251 million years ago in which the oceans stopped producing oxygen and killed off over 90% of all life. Google "dead zones" (areas in the ocean without enough oxygen to sustain fish or shellfish) to find out that there are over 400 in the oceans each year, and some are thought to be due to climate change induced ocean warming and stratification. Did you know that the Norwegians have obtained most of the seeds of the world and put them in a vault on an Arctic island that is temperature controlled and run off renewable energy?
No use is getting depressed over all these negatives, the depressing thing is that most people are oblivious to these issues. Knowing about an issue is a good first step to addressing it.
Re: ClimateGate - A Question for Ed Seedhouse and Paul Beckwith
Brad, is it possible that the flip-flop of politicians over the last few years reflects an increase in extreme precipitation extremes (more droughts, floods), unusual weather patterns (heat wave in Europe in 2003, no snow in any of the big Canadian cities on Christmas day in 2006-7 winter), i.e. changes that the public and politicians can see?
Vlad, what poll are you referring to? I am getting more and more convinced that you work in PR for the oil companies and worked on tobacco campaigns in the past...
No use is getting depressed over all these negatives, the depressing thing is that most people are oblivious to these issues. Knowing about an issue is a good first step to addressing it.
If a man's paycheque requires that he be ignorant about something you can be very certain that he will happily remain so.
"Tom is a well known racist, and like most of them he won't admit it, possibly even to himself." - Ed Seedhouse, October 4, 2020.
Agreed. However I think that retooling society to lower and quickly eliminate emissions would cause an economic boom. Look at the economies of European countries that have already done this...
I found this website called Clean Skies. They claim to be independent and call themselves The Energy & Environment Network. The link is http://www.cleanskies.com/
I found some videoclips on this site talking about the hacked email scandal at University of East Anglia in Britain. It looks like they done some bad things, the investigation continues. Even if you throw out all the data from this group, there still remains huge amounts of credible data in support of climate change. In fact, considering that there are thousands of climate scientists worldwide who support climate change, I would be surprised if you didn't find a few bad apples.
So again, I say you have not presented any evidence to disprove climate change. Greenland is still melting, etc etc...:(
What do you think of the Clean Skies website? Are they independent as they claim, or are they part of the conspiracy (for or against)?
