Rd 5 Magnus played the King's Indian Attack against Zhu. Wonderful!! I'll be watching closely. Its a lifelong favourite opening,

Woodward vs Erdogmus is an interesting line of the Queen's Indian using rook pawns.

Erigaisi vs Van Foreest is a Slav with the white queen parked on c4, the idea of which I first saw in the Botvinnik - Smyslov match.

Grandelius vs Abdusattarov is a Queen's Gambit, again with rook pawn action!

Abdusattarov vs Grandelius agreed drawn. With two rounds left to go Abdusattarov has to make a big surge if he wants to try and win the tournament.

Rd 5 Van Foreest self destructed with the howler 26...e5??? Erigaisi accepted 27.dxe5 followed by e6 and e7 and after Rd8 Van Foreest resigned.

Rd 5 Magnus had to defend very carefully against Zhu but she couldnt find optimum moves in her attack and Magnus won - a messy game.

Rd 6 Andy Woodward gets his game against Magnus. So far everything is sunny on the white side of a Kings Indian.

Erdogmus is on the white side of a Najdorf Sicilian against Abdusattarov. They rattled off eight moves and now Edrogmus is in a twenty minute think.

Rd 6 Van Foreest vs Grandelius is a Giuoco Piano.

Zhu vs Erigaisi is a Classical Pirc.

Rd 6 Erdogmus draws Abdusattarov. A critical half point which leaves Erdogmus a half point up over Abdusattarov going into the last round.

Erdogmus is temporarily in clear first as we await the result of the Zhu - Erigaisi game.

I neglected to mention that Andy Woodward celebrated his 16th birthday by drawing Abdusattarov last Saturday, May 2nd, in rd 2 and being tied for first in the tournament. Thats how a true classical tournament player celebrates their birthday successfully!
