  • XXXVI Pan-American Youth Chess Festival

The 2026 Pan-American Chess Championships are wrapping up today in Columbia. If I counted correctly, a total of 27 Canadians are playing in 12 age / gender sections, from under 8 to under 18. https://s3.chess-results.com/tnr1463...et=NO&SNode=S0

It looks like CM Jingyun (Ryan) Yang will tie for first in the U18 Open section. A Gold medal will give him a direct IM title, while the tie for first should be an IM norm, although only the top 3 players after tie-breaker get a norm, so we will need to see the final results after tie-breakers to see if a title or norm is achieved by Ryan. FMs Tony Lu and Ryan Zunhui Zhong are still playing their last games, but they are also having strong tournaments in the Under 18 section.

Canadian players are playing well in other sections and we should be proud of their results.

It looks like Ryan Yang will finish third on tie-breakers, which should be good enough for an IM norm. He finished with 7 points out of 9 games and was closely followed by Ryan Zunhui Zhong with 6.5 points and Tony Lu with 6 points.

My quick scan of the younger age groups shows Daniel Joshua Lee winning the Under 14 section and Barath Subramanian Suresh and Shabd Dembla finishing tied for first in the Under 12 section (second and third on tie-breaker, respectively). A total of 13 Canadians finished in the top 10 of their sections.

Apologies for missing out the Under 18 Girls results. The omission wasn't intentional. I just didn't scroll down far enough to see this section.
Congratulations to Anni and Ashley for finishing first and second.

Team Canada got many direct titles as well. Just about IM (WIM) norms and titles.

                1. U18 gold = IM title
                2. U18 equal first (not lower than third) = IM norm
                3. U16 gold = IM norm.

                Same rules for WIMs.

So, according to previous posts, direct WIM title for Anni Guo, IM norm for Ryan Yang and WIM norm for Ashley Qian

Victor I believe Anni's is provisional b/c she needs to cross 2000.

Also for everyone else: U14 and U12: 1st equal – FM title; Silver & Bronze – CM title

So the other direct titles that Canada got: Daniel Joshua Lee (direct FM), Shabd Dembla (provisional FM), Barath Subramanian Suresh (provisional FM)

                  Congratulations to all!
