The 2010 Canadian Post-Secondary Team Championships are being hosted this weekend by the University of Toronto at the beautiful Hart House facility. The organizing committee has done an excellent job, and we have set a new record for the event with 19 teams participating!!!!! This breaks the previous record of 17, set at Queen's last year. Congratulations to Chief Organizer Alex Ferreira and his team for their energetic efforts!!!! Bryan Lamb is directing, with his normal professional manner, and play has been proceeding smoothly with no disputes to date in what has traditionally been a friendly but competitive event. Thanks to Bryan!!!! I'm assisting the event with various minor tasks (serving on the Appeals Committee, posting games on chess5.com, updating results here, etc).
Here are some results and standings after round 3; round 4 has just gotten underway, with the final round 5 set for this afternoon. Toronto A leads the championship group with a perfect 3/3 points, trailed closely by Waterloo A with 2.5. Those two teams are playing each other now, with Toronto having White on odd-numbered boards. Toronto's top player FM Bindi Cheng has only played round one to date, and is not playing this round either, which changes the competitive equation.
In the reserve section, Waterloo B, Queen's B, and Western A are tied with 2.5/3 points. In this round, Waterloo B is meeting Western A, with Queen's B facing Guelph B (2 points).
Championship section crosstable to date:
1. Waterloo A (2160) B6+ W7+ W3= B2
2. Toronto A (2066) W4+ B3+ W6+ W1
3. Ottawa A (2020) W8+ W2- B1= B5
4. Queen's A (1915) B2- W8= B7+ B6
5. Carleton A (1912) B7- W6- B8+ W3
6. Guelph A (1907) W1- B5+ B2- W4
7. Toronto C (1836) W5+ B1- W4- B8
8. Toronto B (1831) B3- B4= W5- W7
Strength in the top group is down significantly from last year; defending champion Western's top two players, IM Raja Panjwani and IM Jonathan Tayar, elected not to take part. Dalhousie, which usually has a strong team, cancelled at the last minute; and there are no Montreal teams this year. Also, it had been hoped that York would enter; they could have fielded GM Mark Bluvshtein and IM Leonid Gerzhoy on their top two boards. David Peng chose not to compete for U of T. Masters who are competing include Cheng, FM Christian Stevens (Guelph), NM Mihnea Voloaca (Ottawa), NM Kyle Morrison (Waterloo), and NM Alex Torres (Carleton); all are on board one for their respective schools.
I will be posting some of the interesting games from this event on the site chess5.com throughout the day.
Also, the CPSCA planning meeting was held yesterday, and featured much interesting and lively discusssion among the organizers, the team captains, the host site event coordinator, and various other people. I understand that Alex Ferreira plans to post items from discussion on this site, once the event is complete. As of now, a final decision has not been made on the host for next year.
Larry Bevand from CMA is visiting the event today. Thanks Larry! The Toronto Star is planning to visit today and to report on the tournament, so watch that fine newspaper for an article in the coming days.
Cheers,
Frank Dixon
